Lift Literature celebrates almost 80 South Lake Tahoe students who logged 96,288 minutes of summer reading

Lift Literature is celebrating the winners of its inaugural Summer Reading Challenge! This year’s challenge was sponsored by the San Francisco Giants, Lovin’ Lake Tahoe, Loan Officer Heather Topol with Guild Mortgage, Andrea Drew Consulting, and Aloha Ice Cream.

Over 80 students completed the challenge and read a combined total of 96,288 minutes! Lift Literature believes that all Tahoe kids should be excited and passionate readers.

Grand Prize Winners

Elementary School

Kavi Roff – 3rd grade - 10,000 minutes
Kavi is 8 years old and attends 3rd grade at the Magnet School (LTESMS). He likes to read fantasy adventure books like Percy Jackson, The Wingfeather Saga, and Green Ember Series. Kavi had lots of fun during this reading challenge and is hoping to do it again.

Katalina Williams - 2nd grade - 5050 minutes
Hi! My name is Katalina Williams 2nd grade. I'm 7 years old. I am going start my second grade at the Magnet Elementary School this year.  My passion for reading started since I was in my mom's belly. My Dad read to me every night and he said I would start kicking which meant that I liked the book he read. When I was three months old I attended my first reading/story book group at the local library. Dad took me 2 days a week and he let me have my first library card. I started reading on my own before I was 4 years old. I remember being fascinated with the pictures in the books. Eventually I started learning and recognizing the letters to the point that I was finally reading sentences. My tias: Veronica, Dalila and Melanie have supported me in this journey of reading. They supply me with new books all the time. From American girl series, Mercy Watson, Ivy + Bean, The Chronicles of Narnia, Clementine, and Dragon Master, you name it and I had read it! My favorite books to read right now are chapter books because the story continues from chapter to chapter and you really need to have a good memory and pay attention to follow the story. 

Lastly I want to thank my father Patrick McDonnell for being my reading buddy since I was a baby. He's always there reading book after book. I love you Dadda and can't want to take you to see the Giants. That's my humble way to say “thank you Daddy”.  Also thank you to Lift Literature for doing this reading challenge my little brother Pat and I had lot of fun!

Middle School

Samantha Ebright – 6th grade 7,246 minutes
I am 11 years old and go to STMS. I am in 6th grade. My 9 year old brother and I both love love love to read. My parents have to tell us to stop reading. Some of my favorite books are The Boxcar Children, The Mysterious Benedict Society, Spy School, Trixie Belden, and The Who Was series. Once I pick up a book, it is so hard to put it down. Reading is my favorite activity. When I’m not reading, I like to play sports, do art, and play with friends. Have fun reading!

High School

Riley Hoey – 12th grade - 3410 minutes
My name is Riley Hoey and I am a senior at South Tahoe High School! I read 6 books over the summer and my favorite genres are adventure and fantasy.
