Whittell High School adds Fire Science program to CTE curriculum

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Whittell High School in Zephyr Cove is celebrating a new Fire Science program, something they've been working on with Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) to be part of the school's Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings.

This dynamic course, taught by experienced professionals from TDFPD, is designed to give students a comprehensive introduction to fire science and emergency services. It will equip students with essential fire science skills, including wildland fire behavior, fire suppression, fire prevention, CPR/First Aid, and much more. Students will also gain hands-on experience with fire service equipment and learn about building construction, hazardous materials, and emergency medical care.

With direct instruction from active professionals, students will not only learn essential skills but also gain valuable insights into the fire service industry, preparing them for a rewarding career in public safety.

School officials have said they hope a strong, valuable CTE class like fire science could attract new students, and possibly those from the county's other school, Douglas High.

Course Descriptions:

Fire Science 1: This introductory course covers the principles and procedures used in fire services. Students will learn about fire behavior, firefighter safety, personal protective equipment, and the basic construction of buildings. They will also gain hands-on experience with response procedures for emergency incidents, making it an invaluable foundation for those interested in public safety careers.

Fire Science 2: Building on the skills from Fire Science 1, this advanced course delves into critical areas like wildland fire suppression, ventilation, water supply, and loss control. Students will explore advanced firefighting techniques, including how to manage potential hazards and human factors on the fire line, and they’ll receive training on the latest industry-standard equipment. (Starting in the 2025-2026 school year.)
