New parking spots added to historic Valhalla Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Heller Estate in South Lake Tahoe, better known as Valhalla and part of the Tallac Historic Site, just received some much-needed new paved parking areas. There are now a total of 72 parking spots near Valhalla and the Boathouse Theatre, with the new ones going in to the west of where the original parking spaces were.

The public will have access to the parking area only when Valhalla Tahoe staff opens the gate located off of SR-89 for events. Administrators of the site and the U.S. Forest Service utilized parking that only had room for employees, partners, and volunteers, and now the new area allows for more room for event participants. The parking on the dirt lot along SR-89 will still be available.

Valhalla Tahoe paid for approximately 25 percent of the new parking lot in lieu of their paying annual land use fees directed to the government. Special-use permit holders such as Valhalla Tahoe may offset their annual fee by using funds to improve or construct government-owned facilities within their permit area, according to LTBMU Realty Specialist, Karen Kuentz.

It is possible for permit holders like Valhalla Tahoe to do projects with their fees due to the Granger-Thye Fee Offset Agreement. On government land, it is their intent to ensure that maintenance, reconditioning, renovation, or improvement is completed to arrest deterioration and appreciably prolong the life of the improvements.
