Saint Joseph Community Land Trust sponsors Fraud & Identity Theft Protection Workshop

Event Date:
September 27, 2022 - 5:00pm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Retired FBI Agent Chris Campion will be leading a workshop in South Lake Tahoe in response to the rising tie of cybersecurity and fraud risks to the community. Saint Joseph Community Land Trust is sponsoring the event on Tuesday, September 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the South Lake Tahoe Library meeting room.

Campion will share the latest information on fraud and identity protection for the community. Over his 25-year career with the FBI, Chris worked on varied cases involving financial crimes, public corruption, and bank robberies. Since 2014, he has been a fraud/corruption investigator with IBM’s Legal Department.

"Every day of every year, criminals steal millions of dollars of Americans' hard-earned cash by fraud," said Campion. "Law enforcement does its best but is too often thwarted by international criminals using the anonymity of the Internet. We all need to be aware of these ever-evolving scams to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Especially our most vulnerable population - seniors."

Unfortunately, these days everyone has a story about themselves, friends, or family members being victimized by fraud or Identity theft. Identity theft affects 1 in 3 Americans, and Californians are the top targets in the nation for cybercriminals. Astonishingly in 2021, the Federal Trade Commission received 5.7 million total fraud and identity theft reports. 1.4 million of those were consumer identity theft cases, $2.8 billion of losses were from imposter scams and $392 million were from consumer online shopping. Fraud cases are up 70 percent from 2020 and target every segment of our community.

The South Lake Tahoe Library is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. As space is limited, please RSVP to contact@saintjosephclt.org. For more information about this workshop, please email contact@saintjosephclt.org or visit their website saintjosephclt.org.
