Group seeking signatures to get ban on VHRs on 2024 ballot in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A group of citizens wants to get a ban on vacation home rentals (VHRs) in the Tahoe Township area of Douglas County and they want to have the voters decide.

Linda Dengler, a Kingsbury Grade resident, said she and other county residents want to have an initiative on a 2024 ballot and they need help gathering the needed 4,388 signatures in order to get it on the ballot. The petition states VHRs would be eliminated from all residential zones by Dec. 31, 2027.

Dengler said they want a ban on VHRs in neighborhoods in the Tahoe Township area of the county. She said they only want the VHRs in tourist zones and commercial zones in the township. There is already a ban on VHRs in the rest of the county.

Organizers are asking people to email helpstopdougcovhrs@yahoo.com to find out where the signature gatherers will be. Dengler said they'll be concentrating on the post offices, senior center, Kahle Community Center, and walking neighborhoods.

The efforts to get the signatures are being led by valley residents Jeanne Shizuru and Dave Nelson, a former county commissioner, along with two others from the lake.
