Monthly "Did You Know?" campaign started by Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids (TASK) is launching a "Did You Know?" campaign to bring awareness and education around many topics affecting youth and their families. TASK not only works on reducing access to drugs and alcohol by youth and kids in the community but also brings and supports programs in the schools that teach healthy decision-making, positive communication skills, ways to address stress and anxiety, and other life skills that support thriving youth. TASK will be launching a new theme each month to educate the community.

This month kicks off the campaign sharing what TASK does and who they are.

On the 3rd Thursday of each month, TASK holds a meeting with collaborating organizations and community members. There are over 70 members who participate and support them, from police and CHP, Barton Health, El Dorado County (EDC), the City of South Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Unified School District, school club advisors, other non-profits, and parents. All are welcome to join!

TASK has medicine lock bags that are distributed for free at events to adults who may have prescription drugs or medical marijuana in the home, as a safe way to keep them out of kids’ hands. TASK also gives out Deterra drug deactivation kits which can be used to safely dispose of unused medicine or expired medicine.

TASK works closely with the school district and has a representative at the high school weekly to meet with counselors, staff, and teachers to help determine the needs of the students and what trends of alcohol and substance use need attention.

For the second year, TASK has funded Challenge Days for all 9th graders in South Lake Tahoe. TASK has also funded a Challenge Day assembly for all 7th and 8th graders at the middle school following a Challenge Day for 100 7th graders. Students have the opportunity to participate in this experiential social and emotional learning program where students ignite a shift toward greater school connection, empathy, and inclusion. Programs include interactive exercises that are led by two energetic, relatable, and highly trained facilitators. The program goes beyond traditional anti-bullying efforts, building empathy and inspiring a school-wide movement of compassion and positive change.

Last year, Think Kindness assemblies were funded by TASK at Sierra House and Tahoe Valley Elementary Schools. These assemblies kicked off a three-week challenge for students to complete acts of kindness. This school year TASK is helping to fund and pilot a program at the elementary level called Soule Shoppe. The 12-week curriculum is a unique program designed to give children a deep experience of empathy and connection using Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies with a specific emphasis on equity and belonging. The program will help students acquire tools to be more emotionally resilient, empathetic, happy, and productive and is designed to help children overcome feelings of isolation and strengthen their relationships.

TASK supports Club Live at South Tahoe Middle School and Friday Night Live at South Tahoe High School, through support of the club advisors and club activities. These school clubs promote healthy activities, leadership development, and substance use prevention. TASK hopes to start elementary-level clubs or enrichment programs soon, to help promote skills and healthy habits with younger kids and reduce the risk of future substance use.

TASK also has a texting network through the Nixle program. There are over 800 parents and community members who receive the messages 2-3 times a month, relaying information on drug and alcohol trends in our area, education and resources, drug-free activities for youth, and important information from partners who support our mission. As an example, when counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl first hit the scene, TASK was sending out alerts through this texting network and their partners in the school district. Harm reduction has become a focus of TASK, especially with the national epidemic of fentanyl poisoning taking the lives of so many youth. Working closely with our partner, Sierra Harm Reduction Coalition, in the spring of 2022 TASK facilitated the distribution of Narcan (naloxone) to local schools and a few community hubs, along with instructions on determining an overdose situation and how to administer this opioid reversal agent. Free Narcan and fentanyl test strips may be obtained at the South Tahoe Library, Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless, and EDC Health and Human Services, and substance use disorder offices. Barton Health now has several locations for free distribution. TASK representatives have spoken at several community organizations and to the EDC Board of Supervisors regarding fentanyl/opioid overdose and free Narcan availability.

TASK is becoming well known in the community and in the county as a youth-focused non-profit striving to prevent and reduce substance use and related harm. Through education and partnership with parents, students, and community members, we hope to encourage healthy habits and reduce risk to our kids.
