UPDATE 8PM: After a good day on the fire lines, crews were able to get a containment line around 37 percent of the fire. So far, 5,824 acres have burned. There are 631 personnel are on the fire.
WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - September 11, 2024 - Strong work by fire crews has paid off today, with the high winds over the Davis Fire unable to allow flames to escape from within the current perimeter. During a Wednesday afternoon briefing, Stewart Turner, a fire behavior analyst working on the Davis Fire, said the seven-mile run of fire due to the Red Flag Warning that was possible during yesterday's update is not looking like it will happen. The next hour is critical with upper elevations seeing 60-70 mph gusts.
Airplanes and helicopters have not been able to drop water and fire retardant on the fire today due to those high winds. There is water on the fire from the hand crews with hoses.
There has been smoke over the burned area today that is from pocket fires within the current perimeter and no fire has escaped that line today. With wind coming down from Slide Mountain, the best bet was for fire to increase there but it hasn't happened yet. Some pockets that were smoking also came at the north end below the community of Galena, but the fire was well below the perimeter line.
"The winds are gusting up to 70 mph, and we're not out of the woods yet," said Turner. "But every hour the fire doesn't spread, the better the news."
At 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, Operations Section Chief Jason Clawson said, "We're looking good."
Clawson added that several portions of the fire perimeter have been sheltered from the gusts and all is being held as planned.
"I'm confident they can hold the line," said Clawson.
At this time, the fire has burned 5,646 acres and is 31 percent contained, but the end-of-day figures are not yet available.
