Lake Tahoe power companies elevate level of warning for power outage (shutdown canceled)

SUNDAY UPDATE: The possible power shut down at Lake Tahoe due to anticipated fire weather has been canceled. According to NV Energy, the fire weather did not materialize. Liberty Utilities canceled the warning of a Public Safety Power Shutoff, or PSPS, as well due to improved fire conditions. At this time, they do not anticipate the need to proactively shut off power to customers.

Due to extreme fire conditions, NV Energy is warning of a potential Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) event that may impact the South Lake Tahoe area starting Saturday, September 18 around 8:00pm. Because of the interconnected nature of the electric grid, Liberty customers may experience an extended power outage caused by NV Energy’s de-energization.

Both companies have moved these outages to the warning stages for all of South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Christmas Valley, Kingsbury, Glenbrook and Round Hill. Wind gusts up to 60 mph over the ridges and wind prone areas are expected.

Community resource centers will be set up on both sides of the state line should the power be shut off.

Customers who require power to operate life-essential medical equipment are strongly encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they are unable to secure necessary alternative power.
