Lake Tahoe Basin-wide evacuation plan completed, open for 60-day comment period

LAKE TAHOE, Calif/Nev. - A new Lake Tahoe Regional Evacuation Plan has been developed through a collaboration between Lake Tahoe fire chiefs, law enforcement agencies, and emergency management personnel. The plan was created using a diverse team of experts from two states and five counties, using experiences gained during past major wildfires.

The 185-page document is a "living document" intended to provide the public with critical information related to evacuations and will be updated periodically.

The teams involved all have jurisdictional responsibilities around Lake Tahoe and pulled together for this planning effort. The result is a robust and critically needed Regional Evacuation Plan for the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The document is organized so that the evacuation information in the main body of the document applies to ALL parts of the Lake Tahoe Basin. There are seven annexes in the back of the document that provide more specific information that is only pertinent to the specific areas.

The Evacuation Plan emphasizes regional cooperation and collaboration in the event of a large wildfire that may occur in the future. Local emergency experts recognize that planning for a large wildfire that will require evacuations is a reality for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Fire, law, and emergency management partners are more prepared to manage these events as a result of this new Evacuation Plan.

The Evacuation Plan is open for a sixty-day comment period ending on November 20, 2024. Submit your comments by emailing fireinfo@cityofslt.us.
