SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Backcountry areas within the Caldor Fire boundary and surrounding terrain are currently closed and a new closure notice became effective September 18 and is in place to the end of 2021.
The US Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has work to do on stabilization of land around dozer lines, are dealing with dangerous hot spots in the fire area, and want to allow firefighters access to the complete area.
During the Saturday evening community meeting, LTBMU Acting Forest Supervisor Gwen Sanchez said there is still active fire in Desolation Wilderness they are working to contain and once that is done the footprint of the closure could be reduced.
In the Meiss Meadows area, there is closure because there is a lot of fire line in there and she wants to allow space for firefighters to get in, repair the line, and remove dozers and other heavy equipment.
"We don't want to compete with the recreationists," said Sanches. "There is a lot of damage in the area. Allow the firefighters some space."
In and around Meyers and South Lake Tahoe, the area is closed because of the dozer and contingency lines and crews need to get in and repair those lines and mitigate hazards.
Eldorado National Forest remains in a full closure.
LTBMU issued Forest Order 19-21-06 to prohibit people from going into or being upon the restricted Caldor Fire Emergency Closure area which is reflected in the maps or in detail below.
