Quarry Fire at 1,774 acres and smoke expected to head northeast to the Carson Valley

The Quarry Fire in the Stanislaus National Forest was one of many fires in that area started by lightning on September 9. As of Tuesday, September 26, it has burned 1,774 acres of Miwok Ranger District land.

Smoke from the Quarry Fire is visible in the area around the fire and is expected to drift to the northeast to just south of Lake Tahoe and into the Carson Valley south of US50 on Tuesday afternoon. Check out the fire and smoke map at fire.airnow.gov for more information.

The wind forecast for the Lake Tahoe Basin on Tuesday is for wind from the southwest to 5-10 mph, with gusts to 20 mph through the night, switching to a westerly flow on Wednesday.

The Type 3 Incident Management Team has 102 personnel involved.

District fire managers immediately worked to ensure the naturally ignited fires stayed within pre-determined boundaries. Fire personnel with the Stanislaus National Forest are currently managing the Quarry Fire to achieve multiple resource objectives.

These objectives include benefits such as reducing concentrations of dead ground fuels, re-establishing multigenerational timber stands, improving wildlife habitat, promoting vegetation diversity, and re-introducing fire into fire-adapted ecosystems.

For Tuesday: Fire acreage will continue to grow as crews take advantage of weather and burning conditions suitable to accomplish and safely promote the spread of this naturally ignited wildfire.

Crews ignited fire from the ridge tops along the east side of the fire filling in unburned areas on Monday. They also worked filling in areas to the north and west, creating a patchwork of burned and unburned fuels. Crews prepped areas to protect natural and cultural resources where fire may pass through.

A UAS (unmanned aircraft system) crew scouted areas for potential aerial ignitions Tuesday.
