Constitution Week 2021 celebrated in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council honored Constitution Week by reading a proclamation to open its September 21 meeting. The purpose of the observance week is to promote study and education about the United States Constitution which was originally adopted by the American Congress of the Confederation on September 17, 1787.

The recognition week started on August 2, 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower approved a congressional resolution petitioned by the Daughters of the American Revolution. It was President George W Bush who officially declared the inception of Constitution Week in September 2002.

The Daughter's of the American Revolution asked for the week to:

- Emphasize citizens' responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution.
- Inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America's great heritage and the foundation for our way of life.
- Encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Lake Tahoe Chapter was present for the reading of the City's proclamation and also have been honoring the Constitution with a display in the South Lake Tahoe branch of the El Dorado library. It will be there for the month September.

Whereas, the Constitution of the United State of America, the guardian of our liberties, embodies the principles of limited government in a republic dedicated to rule by law; and

Whereas, September 17, 2021, marks the two hundred and thirty-third anniversary of the framing of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper to accord official recognition to this magnificent document and its memorable anniversary; and

Whereas, Public Law 915 guarantees the issuing of a proclamation each year by the President of the United States of America designating September 17 through 23 as Constitution Week.

Now therefore, the City Council of the City of South Lake Tahoe do hereby proclaim the week of September 17 through 23 as "Constitution Week" and ask our citizens to reaffirm the ideals the framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties.

The United States Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties, freedoms and inalienable rights.
