Small fire near Sierra-at-Tahoe possibly smoldering since Caldor Fire

Crews responded to a fire within the Caldor Fire burn area on Thursday afternoon.

At 4:15 p.m. on September 29, the USFS and CalFire fire crews responded to an area near Sierra-at-Tahoe known as Huckleberry Flat. Lake Valley Fire responded and staged in the area. The person calling in the fire had seen a stream of smoke and alerted authorities.

The fire was found about 3,000 feet inside the Caldor perimeter.

Helicopter water drops and ground crews were able to contain the fire Thursday night which was about 10 feet by 10 feet in size. A ground hand crew and helicopter returned Friday to add more water.

An Eldorado National Forest spokesperson said the fire is possibly a remnant of the Caldor Fire and has been smoldering for over a year, or, it could have been a lightning strike, it is under investigation.
