Friends of the Library hosting talk on the Al Tahoe Pioneer Cemetery

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The next South Lake Tahoe Library program will be held on October 22 at 5:30 p.m. Cemetery Tales: The Families of the Al Tahoe Pioneer Cemetery will be presented by Melissa Trader of the Al Tahoe Pioneer Cemetery Improvement Committee (ATPCIC).

Featured in Haunted Lake Tahoe by Janice Oberding and the only historic cemetery in the basin the public can visit, the Al Tahoe Pioneer Cemetery is the resting place for some of Tahoe’s earliest settlers. Come experience Tahoe history told through the stories uncovered about their lives. Our first school superintendent, the gambler who faked his death, a young boat maker who was shot accidentally - or was it murder? Melissa will captivate those attending with some of these tales. She will also teach everyone about the library’s Tahoe Special Collection section where she has done a lot of the research.

The Al Tahoe Pioneer Cemetery is a historic cemetery in South Lake Tahoe and was established in the mid-1800s. The cemetery is located at 790 Alameda Avenue. The earliest known burial was in 1861 and the last known burial was in 1959. Through ground penetrating radar it was discovered there are 121 burials. Of those burials, 10 are known and have grave markers, and 111 burials are unknown and unmarked.

In 2018, wanting to restore and improve the cemetery, representatives from the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lake Tahoe Historical Society, the Kiwanis of Tahoe Sierra, and the Al Tahoe neighborhood formed ATPCIC.

On May 3, 2022, The group entered into a formal agreement with the City of South Lake Tahoe, the owner of the property, to solicit funds through a variety of fund-raising events and grants to complete restoration and improvement projects.
