SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) voted unanimously Thursday night to elect Jon Hetherton as the new trustee for area 2. He will take office and the oath at the Board's December meeting.
The Board gave Hetherton and the other candidate, Leonard Carter, a series of questions to answer during their interview which started prior to their regularly scheduled Board meeting. No one had filed to run in the November 8 election for Area 2 so the District opened it up to the public to apply.
Hetherton, an insurance broker, has lived in the community for 50 years and graduated from South Tahoe High, the school where he and his wife's oldest child is currently a student. Their other two are at South Tahoe Middle School.
He said he wanted to be a trustee because "I feel I want to be a board member to assist in guiding LTUSD to providing top-notch educational and life experience for all students and to enhance the parent and community involvement with our schools and students.'
Carter has lived in South Lake Tahoe for 34 years with his wife. Their three daughters all graduated from South Tahoe High.
When asked why he wanted to be a trustee, Carter said "With my background and general knowledge in the area of education, I can help facilitate a community environment that will improve our students' educational experiences resulting in improved achievement scores."
Hetherton will take the spot being vacated by Trustee Brandi Bannister. She did not file to run for reelection as she is moving out of Area 2.
