Caldor Post-Fire BAER Assessment report released

The USDA Forest Service has released a summary of its post-fire assessment for emergency stabilization measures and actions on National Forest System (NFS) lands burned by the Caldor Fire on the Eldorado National Forest and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

The emergency treatments and activities are designed to decrease possible impacts to critical values from the burned area such as life and safety, property, critical natural resources, and cultural resources.

The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) describes the current erosion potential in the burn area which is predicted to be much higher in the Cosumnes River basin than it is in the South Fork American River basin and the Lake Tahoe Basin.

With heavy rainfall expected in the area, the assessment will quickly show how accurate they were in regards to the potential for mud and rock slides, and debris flow probability.

The BAER shows 101,292 acres, or 46.3 percent of the area burned, has a "low" erosion hazard rating, 19.7 percent of the area is rated moderate, 23.5 percent is severe, 4.3 percent is severe. 13,678 acres, or 6.2 percent of the fire area is not rated as it is rock outcropping.

The full report outlines conditions and planned treatments.
