Tahoe Youth and Family Services executive director announces retirement

Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) Executive Director Karen Carey has announced her retirement effective January 31, 2022. She brought many years of experience with her when she joined the non-profit after retiring as the executive director with Tahoe Safe Alliance and has been a valued leader of the organization since 2018.

“It has been an honor to be the executive director of Tahoe Youth & Family Services. Its mission is critical to our community and to the lives of so many children, youth, adults, and families,” said Carey.

Karen came out of retirement to take an interim job with TYFS after the resignation of its previous director. She stayed and created a strong board of directors that balances the relationships between Douglas County and El Dorado County. She worked with the board to meet the needs of the organization by implementing key policies and procedures to strengthen the sustainability of TYFS. Karen also increased awareness of the agency through community collaboration, creating an Advisory Council, and through her leadership and dedication to TYFS, overcame many challenges in fundraising through the pandemic.

The TYFS Board of Directors recognizes Karen’s desire to retire, return to her coaching and consulting business, “Thrive,” and enjoy time with family and traveling.

This is an opportunity for the agency that has been serving the community since 1975 to welcome new leadership that will embrace its mission to “Promote the healthy development of children, families, and individuals through counseling and support services.”
