SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is warning the public about a current scam where the scammers are pretending to be from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
Over the past few days, SLTPD has received complaints regarding phone calls from people pretending to be members of their department. The scammer tells the victim they have a warrant for their arrest due to failing to appear in court. The scammers demand immediate payment for the victim to avoid legal repercussions.
The scammers are using methods to make their phone calls appear to come from the police department. They are also using the real names of SLTPD officers.
What to do:
The police department would never call a citizen regarding a warrant and demand money. If you receive a call similar to the one described and are unsure if there is still an issue, immediately hang up and call the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at 530-542-6100.
Do not provide any information or money to the scammer.
