California Tahoe Conservancy looks to buy Motel 6, old Carrows and nearby property

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During its next quarterly meeting on November 8, the California Tahoe Conservancy board will discuss the possible acquisition of two environmentally sensitive parcels in South Lake Tahoe - one home to Motel 6 and the old Carrows restaurant and a Knox Johnson parcel on Sunset Drive across the river.

Staff will present to the board a plan that would cost $10,000,000 and would cover purchasing the parcels, demolishing existing structures, and stabilizing the related sites.

The meeting will be a virtual one held on Zoom starting at 9:00 a.m. next Monday. See below for instructions to participate.

Also on the agenda is the purchase of another sensitive lot in Tahoe City in the Timberland Tract. The board will consider and possibly authorize the acquisition of 975 Chickadee Lane for up to $25,000.

The board will also consider changing the name of the South Tahoe Greenway Shared Use Trail to the Dennis T. Machida Memorial Greenway. Machida was the top executive of the California Tahoe Conservancy and one of the state's key conservation advocates. He was with the California Coastal Conservancy and part of the state's sprawling environmental network seeking ways to preserve California's nature. He died in 2005.

The consideration and possible authorization to adopt the Forestry Program Guidelines, accept and expend up to $50,000,000 to implement activities consistent with the Guidelines, implement such activities, and execute all other necessary agreements is on the agenda.
