Overland Meat & Seafood Co. of South Lake Tahoe changes hands

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the first time in its history, Overland Meat & Seafood Co. is not being run by a member of the Cohen family.

As of November 1, 2021, the new owner is longtime local Victor Gomez.

Mark Cohen opened the popular store in November of 1987, then son Brian bought it and took over on June 15, 2005 after he spent 15 years working as a butcher at a large grocery store chain in town.

Brian has created a hub for both locals, visitors and second home owners, one that supplies quality fresh seafood and meat, along with wine and seasonings. Daily specials bring customers in every day, and Victor will be continuing what Brian started.

"The reputation speaks for itself - quality and philanthropy," said Victor. "I will continue the legacy of Overland."

The 1997 graduate of South Tahoe High School has spent the last 20 years in hospitality and managment, mostly on the South Shore. Victor said the pandemic led him to look at changing careers when he saw that Overland was for sale.

Brian will still be around the store on Lake Tahoe Boulevard. He will stay on and show Victor the ropes for the first month, then join the Overland team as an employee for a few days a week until he retires. His wife Kim retired five years ago and he said he is looking forward to spending more time with her. Brian said he is also ready to spend more time on his mountain bike and skis.

"I love doing what I do, but am ready to step back from day-to-day operations," said Brian.

Victor said he isn't going to change anything at the iconic business for the foreseeable future. People can still enjoy the daily specials and Thanksgiving Diesel turkeys are on their way and go on sale Friday, November 19. His wife Marimar is helping out as well and taking on social media duties.

Overland is located in the Kings Trading Post, 2227 Lake Tahoe Blvd., Suite C, in South Lake Tahoe. They are currently closed on Sundays and Wednesdays and open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
