Alpine County Sheriff's Office announces new Safe Drug Disposal Program

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The Alpine County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) has launched the Safe Drug Disposal Program in partnership with Life in Check, a leading organization dedicated to safe and responsible medication disposal. This initiative aims to provide Alpine County residents with a secure, anonymous, and environmentally friendly way to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs.

Safe Drug Disposal Receptacles have been installed at three convenient locations to serve the community:
99 Water St., Markleeville, Calif.

75 Diamond Valley Rd., Markleeville, Calif.
88 Bear Valley Rd., Bear Valley, Calif.

These receptacles will be available to the public year-round, ensuring a safe and accessible method for properly disposing of medications. By utilizing these locations, residents can help prevent drug misuse, protect the environment, and ensure the safety of children, pets, and others.
Sheriff Tom Minder emphasized the importance of this new program, stating, “Improper disposal of prescription drugs poses a significant risk to our community. By offering a safe and secure disposal option, we are taking a proactive step to combat drug abuse, prevent environmental contamination, and enhance public safety.”

The program aligns with ACSO’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of Alpine County residents. The Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to take advantage of this free and confidential service. No questions will be asked, and individuals can dispose of medications safely without concern.

This initiative is made possible through ACSO’s partnership with Life in Check, whose mission is to reduce the impact of unused medications on public health and the environment. Together, we are working to make our communities safer.

On the South Shore of Lake Tahoe there are receptacles in the lobby at the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the mid-town Safeway in South Lake Tahoe.
