South Lake Tahoe sales tax collection up in second quarter

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has released the second quarter (April-June) sales tax report. Tax received on sales in the city was up for this quarter by 4.4 percent while El Dorado County and the State of California were both down in this same period.

South Lake Tahoe’s gross receipts from April through June were 4.2 percent above the second sales period in 2023. After adjusting for reporting modifications such as audit corrections and delayed payments, actual sales were up 4.4 percent. Sales tax results varied across tax groups.

For the fifth consecutive quarter, restaurant-hotel receipts improved, with hotels and motels plus fast casual dining offsetting slight declines in casual and quick-service dining – as people enjoyed visiting the region during the spring months. The City’s allocation from the countywide use tax pool jumped 9.3 percent due to gains in e-commerce bolstering the overall pool revenues.

Increased building materials sales and contractor activity supported a 19.5 percent gain in building-construction as spring improvement projects helped results. Service station revenues benefitted from the fluctuating price of crude oil, and perhaps increased consumption, netting to the positive for the quarter.

Conversely, general retail dipped with fewer purchases at sporting goods/bike businesses. Lower cannabis sales contributed to a slight decline in food-drug returns. Autos-transportation-related sales slumped 11.5 percent for the period.

Voter-approved Measures S and Q posted similar results with increased restaurant-hotel and building-construction receipts.

Net of adjustments, taxable sales for all of El Dorado County were flat over the comparable time period; the Sacramento region was down 0.1 percent.
