Winter weather and wind advisories in place for Lake Tahoe Wednesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's another quick-moving storm passing through the Sierra on Wednesday, Nov. 13, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS)in Reno to issue advisories.

There is a Wind Advisory from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area, Surprise Valley California, Lassen-Eastern Plumas-Eastern Sierra Counties, and Northern Washoe County. Expect southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe should be 3-5 feet.

Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

The Winter Weather Advisory is in place from 1 p.m. Wednesday to 1 a.m. Thursday for the Lake Tahoe Basin above 7000 feet.

Expect wet snow for the Tahoe Basin above 7000 feet. Snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches on the west side of Tahoe and up to 2 inches on the east side of Tahoe. Winds gusting up to 50 mph in Sierra valleys and 100 mph or greater along the Sierra crest.

Areas between 6000 to 7000 feet could see a mix of rain and snow with sleet possible.

Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening commute. Very strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines.

The two-day forecast for South Lake Tahoe from NWS Reno:

Wednesday - A chance of rain and snow between 1 pm and 4 pm, then snow likely. Increasing clouds, with a high near 50. Breezy, with a southwest wind of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. The chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.

Wednesday Night - Snow likely before 7 pm, then rain and snow likely between 7 pm and 1 am, then a chance of snow after 1 am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 26. Southwest wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. The chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.

Thursday - A chance of snow before 10 am, then a chance of rain between 10 am and 4 pm, then snow likely, possibly mixed with rain after 4 pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 48. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. The chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.

Thursday NightSnow. Low around 19. Southwest wind around 5 mph. The chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is possible.
