City enhances snow removal operations and service with new equipment and strategies

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - To improve snow removal operations and better serve the public, the City of South Lake Tahoe is proud to announce a series of enhancements to its Snow Removal Plan for the upcoming winter season. These updates include the acquisition of new equipment, an expanded workforce, and a more efficient operational strategy.

The City has purchased four new graders and two new snow blowers, ensuring that our snow removal fleet is well-equipped to handle even the harshest winter conditions. This new equipment is expected to be delivered over the next several months. The city has also expanded its workforce by increasing the number of seasonal snow removal equipment operators from two to seven. This growth in seasonal personnel allows us to bolster the year-round staffing to be better prepared for any snow-related challenges that winter may throw our way.

There are a total of eight citywide snow removal zones and the number of snowplow drivers will increase for each zone during night operations. This strategic deployment of drivers will enable the city to address snow removal promptly during overnight hours. The City has also worked with Lake Tahoe Unified School District staff to identify priority bus routes and bus stops and to improve coordination to support the school district with student transportation to and from schools.

To further enhance our snow removal operations, the city has invested in a Global Positioning System (GPS) for all snow equipment. This technology will allow our dedicated staff to collect data on the status of plowing in each neighborhood. This data will be used to improve route patterns and enhance driver training, resulting in more effective and efficient snow removal services.

To augment community efforts to improve year-round pedestrian safety, the City has entered into an unprecedented contract for a private company to conduct sidewalk snow removal along the majority of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Emerald Bay Rd. south of the Y. Sidewalks along these primary pedestrian routes will be cleared after storms with more than three inches of snow accumulation.

Mayor Creegan expressed the City's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents during the winter months. "We understand the challenges that winter weather can bring, and we are dedicated to providing the best snow removal services possible. These investments and operational improvements are a testament to our commitment to serving our community."

As the City gears up to face whatever the winter may bring, residents are encouraged to take steps to ensure their own preparedness. Here are some key measures to consider:

1. Stock up on essential winter supplies such as snow melt, shovels, snow pushers, ice scrappers, etc.
2. Inspect rooftop snow melt systems.
3. Plan for and clear areas for off-street parking.
4. Mark your driveway with snow stakes.
5. Remove all obstructions from the right of way and sidewalks.
6. Assemble or inspect your home emergency kit.
7. Disconnect water hoses and insulate exterior pipes.
8. Install or inspect and test carbon monoxide alarms.
9. Prepare your vehicle by inspecting tires, stowing tire chains or cables in your vehicle, getting a good snow pusher or brush, and assembling your car emergency kit (shovel, ice scrapper, blanket, sand or kitty litter, gloves, flashlight, booster cables, drinking water, etc.)

By taking these precautions and being prepared, residents can contribute to a safer and more comfortable winter season for themselves and their community. For more information and updates on the City's snow removal efforts, please visit www.Cityofslt.us/SnowRemoval.
