Winter weather warning continue around Lake Tahoe as crews work on restoring power/clearing roads

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe is under a Winter Storm Warning until 4 a.m. Monday. Even though the heaviest snowfall is most likely over, another 3-5" of snow is expected at lake level in South Lake Tahoe during the day Sunday. A High Avalanche Warning is in place for the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains between Yuba Pass (Hwy 49) on the north and Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4) on the south, including the greater Lake Tahoe area.

There are very low chain controls today, with eastbound US50 chain restrictions starting on the eastern border of Placerville and Colfax on eastbound I80, as well as part of Reno and Carson City.

I80 has been closed for periods today due to no visibility over Donner Pass and questionable traction. US50 at Echo Summit has been closing due to avalanche control and accidents. Mt. Rose Highway closed Saturday evening and has not reopened, as well as closures on the Carson Spur/SR88, and parts of Sr267 in Kings Beach. SR89 around Emerald Bay never reopened after the last storm.

Snow plows are out in force to remove the 2-3 feet of snow around South Lake Tahoe, many making quick passes before going back to finish up the heavy work.

If heading to the slopes, check their social media pages as they may be closed. Sierra-at-Tahoe is closed, and Heavenly is only opening Stagecoach and keeping the California side closed for Sunday. Palisades and Northstar are opening some lifts.

There are reports of several downed trees on the roads and at homes, so use caution.

NV Energy reports 2443 customers are without power, and Liberty Utilities has over 13,000 customers without power though that number has been fluctuating with north and south shore areas dark.
