EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - When most people think of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Tahoe Search and Rescue (SAR) team members, they often think of trained volunteers who hike long distances and climb up mountains to help rescue injured or lost persons. What they may not realize is that there are other trained volunteers whose primary mission is to help prepare for and make these rescues possible. These are the Incident Support Team (IST) volunteer members of the Search and Rescue team who perform tasks such as assisting search-and-rescue coordinators, driving SAR vehicles, operating as a radio dispatcher, documenting radio traffic, tracking tactical resources, and planning for future needs.
Unlike SAR volunteers who go into the field to aid others, virtually all of the duties IST members typically perform require only limited endurance and physical conditioning.
