Calm start to the week in Lake Tahoe, then a series of storms with heavy snow expected

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A series of Pacific winter storms will bring periods of stormy weather to much of California and Nevada next week. There will be few, if any, meaningful breaks in the weather for the Sierra once
the storms begin on Tuesday, so plan ahead.

Quiet weather continues through Monday at Lake Tahoe, then stormy weather returns Tuesday and Wednesday with rain and snow. Snow levels are expected

to rise on Wednesday so very wet snow or a mix of rain and snow is expected for the Tahoe Basin which may limit snowfall potential below 6500-7000 feet.

Those two days are an appetizer for the bigger storm arriving mid-week when large upper-level low parks itself near or just off the West Coast for much of the week and will be the main culprit for the incoming inclement weather concerns. From Wednesday onward, multiple waves appear to swing around the upper trough. While moderate to heavy mountain snows begin later on Wednesday, simulations are showing signals for Thursday being a big storm day for much of the Sierra and western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

By Thursday night and Friday, snow levels will likely be down near all valley floors for an increasing chance for lower valley accumulating snow into the holiday weekend (another, much colder wave possible Christmas Eve/Christmas Day).

Winter Weather Advisory in effect from December 21, 4:00 p.m. until December 22, 04:00 p.m. Winter Storm Watch in effect from December 22, 4:00 p.m. until December 26, 4:00 p.m.
