Epic powder days will have to wait as Lake Tahoe area ski resorts closed due to conditions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is currently too much snow to allow Lake Tahoe resorts to open today due to closed roads leading to the ski areas and hazardous conditions.

The Sierra Avalanche Center said due to another round of heavy snowfall last night and early this morning combined with gale-force winds and intense blowing and drifting snow, dangerous avalanche conditions continue in the backcountry. Large avalanches could run down into treed areas below. Traveling in, near, or below avalanche terrain is not recommended today.

As of 10:00 a.m. Monday:

Kirkwood: 20" of snow in last 24 hours, 65" over last seven days. Food operations are open but no lifts are running.

Heavenly: 23" of snow in last 24 hours, 68" over last seven days. Lifts are closed for the day but food operations at the California Lodge are open.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe: 20-30" of new snow, 86-103" of snow from the current storm. They are closed due to the Mt. Rose Highway being closed.

Northstar: 35" of snow in last 24 hours, 117" over the last seven days. They are closed Monday.

Palisades: 30" of snow in last 24 hours, 104" over the last seven days. They are closed Monday due to avalanche danger and SR89 is closed between Tahoe City and Truckee.

Ski Homewood: 31-36" of snow in last 24 hours, 84-111" of snow from the current storm. Due to multiple hazards and safety concerns, the mountain will be closed for the day.

Diamond Peak: 27" of snow, 111" of snow from the storm. Closed today due to conditions.
