Postal carriers unable to get to your home? How to get your mail in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since many South Lake Tahoe roads have not yet been plowed after the most recent snow, mail carriers are unable to deliver mail to most homes.

The post offices in Meyers and Tahoe Valley were closed Monday but officials hope to get them open by Tuesday.

The main post office on Al Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe is open and staff will hold all mail that hasn't been delivered due to inaccessible mailboxes for ten days, but there are actions residents can take to assure mail will be held longer in case of more storms.

People can put a vacation hold on their mail for up to 30 days by going to usps.com and requesting a hold.

Both the 10-day and 30-day holds include mail that previously was unable to be delivered. For example, if mail couldn't be delivered to your home on December 24, and you don't fill out the 30-day vacation hold until December 28, the mail from the missed days since the 24th will be held along with that from the upcoming 30 days.

The Al Tahoe post office is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day and people can go in with valid identification to pick up their missed mail.

"We hope to be back to normal tomorrow and will attempt home delivery as long as we can access the mailboxes," said Postmaster Janet Twyman. "We apologize for any inconvenience this causes our customers."
