I-80 partially reopens to some eastbound traffic

CalTrans has reopened eastbound I-80 to passenger vehicles and essential commercial vehicles only. No estimated time of reopening westbound lanes or allowing other vehicles.

R2 chain controls are in effect from Alta to the Nevada state line.

The highway has been closed for days along with other mountain highways. When US-50 opened late Monday, stranded motorists hit the road. After a jackknifed truck and multiple vehicles slid into the snowbank, it closed again Tuesday morning.

Since reopening at 10:00 a.m., the highway has been one long traffic jam from Carson City to Placerville. Officials are asking those not needing to travel today to stay off the road.

Up to the minute information and road camera views can be found at http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ for California roads and https://nvroads.com/ for those in Nevada.
