UPDATE 10:22AM: US-50 has reopened but drivers need to be aware there is massive gridlock in both directions for miles. Trees are still in the roadway so use caution. R2 chain controls are in effect: Trucks full chains, only 4-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four are allowed without chains.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - US-50 was not open very long as a jack-knifed truck and a collision has closed it again.
As of 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, the highway is closed from Meyers to Sand Flat so emergency crews can clear the roadway.
A truck with chains on all tires slid on the snow-covered road near the 34-Mile stone at 6:49 a.m. Tuesday, and about five minutes later eight cars also reportedly slid off the road. At 8:22 a.m. there was a two-car collision near Kyburz.
Once crews can remove the truck and get all cars safely on their way, the road will reopen.
