Winter Storm Warning in place until Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Things changed quickly from heavy rain warnings to flood and winter storm warnings. The forecasted 1-2 inches of rain for Saturday at Lake Tahoe is now up to 20 inches of snow around the lake.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning until Sunday, January 1 at 4 a.m. Expect heavy snow with additional snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches, except 2 to 3 feet above 7000 feet.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage.

A Flood Advisory remains in place due to the precipitation affecting the western Nevada rivers and streams. There are areas of flooding around Lake Tahoe as well.

NWS Reno forecast for South Lake Tahoe at 6250 foot elevation:

This Afternoon - Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 35. South wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 8 to 12 inches possible.

Tonight - Snow likely, mainly before 10pm. The snow could be heavy at times. Cloudy, with a low around 14. North wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible.

New Year's Day - Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 32. Northeast wind around 5 mph.

Sunday Night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 9. East wind around 5 mph becoming south after midnight.
