South Lake Tahoe Police urge safe driving this holiday

Winter is upon us as we begin to see light snowfall and cold, icy conditions. Every year families travel to South Lake Tahoe for Thanksgiving and Christmas, leading to congested roadways and an increase in pedestrian traffic. Many of these travelers are foreign to winter weather and do not have much experience driving in icy conditions. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department reminds motorists to be alert and courteous so that everyone can arrive at their destination and enjoy the holiday season with their friends and loved ones.

Fender bender sends one to hospital in South Lake Tahoe

A fender bender in front Stardust Lodge sent one to the hospital Monday evening. At approximately 5:21 p.m., the driver of a westbound Subaru was not paying attention and ran into the back of a pick-up truck.

Paramedics and a medic and fire crew from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded along with South Lake Tahoe Police.

The passenger in the truck was transported to Barton Hospital with minor injuries. Both drivers did not have injuries.

No one was cited and alcohol or drugs did not play a factor.

Douglas County Jail wins honors for inmate care

The National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) has awarded the Douglas County Sheriff's Office for maintaining the "Custodial Facility of the Year."

Their jail was selected for the prestigious award from over 500 jails and prisons across the country.

DCSO representatives attended the NCCHC ceremony to pick up their award.

El Dorado County awarded DUI prosecution grant

Those arrested for DUI in El Dorado County, especially repeat offenders and those involved in fatal or injury crashes, can expect to face highly trained, specialized prosecutors, funded by a $195,677.00 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). The grant to the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office will fund a Vertical Prosecution team that will work cases from arrest through conviction and sentencing.

Three cited in underage alcohol sting in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three local employees were cited by a recent decoy operation to catch people selling alcohol to minors.

On September 28, 2017, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, through a grant form the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), conducted the minor decoy operation where minors under their supervision attempted to purchase alcohol from 19 different establishments.

Group asks City Council to consider allowing food trucks in South Lake Tahoe

A planned food truck event in South Lake Tahoe had to be cancelled this summer due to the prohibitive costs and processes involved in putting on such an event.

"We are so hungry to get a food truck culture going in Lake Tahoe,” said Rob Giustina of On Course Events, the company who had planned the "Tahoe Truck Stop" food truck weekend event.

Local food pairings a hit at sold-out Sample the Sierra

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you waited to the last minute to purchase tickets for the 8th annual Sample the Sierra you were out of luck on Saturday at Bijou Community Park. The popular festival of food, wine and beer sold out all pre-sale tickets prior to the event, and sold out of tickets at the gate just after opening, much to the disappointment of many.

1,500 full tasting tickets and 50 children tickets were sold. Those lucky enough to get in moved from booth to booth, each with either a wine, beer or alcohol paired with food, or a local artisan and their wares.

Suicide Prevention: Working together to save a life

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and South Tahoe Now will be running a series of stories on suicide prevention.

“For anyone who has lost a friend or loved one to suicide, this month can be especially hard,” said Laura Walny, manager with the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). “We hope that by supporting one another and working together to raise awareness about suicide, we can ultimately save lives.”

Homelessness is a housing issue in South Lake Tahoe and beyond

Homelessness isn’t just a South Lake Tahoe issue. It isn’t just an El Dorado county issue. It isn't just a California problem, though the state ranks 49th in housing units per capita.

And it isn't a problem that is going away any time soon and will take a change in the way the problem is currently being addressed to be solved. For every 100 people who are added to the population of California there are only 32 housing units built to house them.

South Lake Tahoe man sentenced to 56 months in prison

South Lake Tahoe resident Larry Martinez Guzman, aka Larry Guzman-Martinez, 33, was sentenced to 4 years and 8 months in state prison after pleading no contest to the charges of felony driving under the influence causing injury, felony assault, and hit and run.

NHP and MADD team up to keep Nevada highways safe

The Nevada Highway Patrol Association (NHPA) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) announced a new strategic partnership today. The partnership will combine the NHPA's goal of continued safety on Nevada's highways and MADD's goals to end drunk and drugged driving, support victims of drunk driving, and bring an end to underage drinking.

Man drowns at Lake Tahoe's Sand Harbor

A man drowned at Sand Harbor Saturday evening according to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO).

The man was swimming near the beach at approximately 5:00 p.m. when he drowned on July 29, 2017, according to Bob Harmon, spokesman for WCSO. Lifeguards from San Harbor got the victim to the shore and starting life-saving measures. The man was taken to an Incline Village hospital where he later died.

Harmon said bystanders estimated the victim to be in his late 20s.

One simple item will help save lives when on Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE - Boating, rafting, kayaking and paddling are just a few ways to enjoy beautiful Lake Tahoe, but they come with simple safety precautions and preparations to ensure that day is complete and enjoyable.

"People are very excited to get on the water," said Edwin Lyngar, Nevada Department of Wildlife's (NDOW) Water Educator. "Take safety precautions as you can't depend on luck."

Lyngar as well as both California and Nevada water safety experts were at Sand Harbor last week to inform the public about how easy it is to be safe on the water.

Another busy 4th of July holiday is in the books for South Lake Tahoe. Both the South Lake Tahoe police and fire departments were kept busy with numerous calls throughout the weekend, resulting in one drowning, issues with alcohol and several disturbance calls.

Fatal crash in Alpine County

A single car crash in Alpine County Monday afternoon claimed the life of a Nevada man.

At 3:30 p.m. on July 3, the driver of a Ford pickup was headed east on Airport Road one mile east of State Route 89 in Markleeville, Calif. For an unknown reason the car drifted off of the paved portion of the road and onto the shoulder. The pickup and driver went down a steep dirt embankment and overturned onto it's roof. It was a single crash.

The unidentified 61-year-old male driver was from Moundhouse, Nev. No alcohol appears to be involved.

Douglas County rules to keep people safe at Lake Tahoe on 4th of July

Possession and or discharge of fireworks is unlawful and will not be tolerated. Persons found in violation of the fireworks ordinance face criminal penalties, including a fine of up to $1,000.00 and/or confinement in the county jail for a period of up to six months.

Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Teresa Duffy will lead the 107th annual Carson Valley Days parade as the Grand Marshall. The theme of the parade and festival is "A Salute to First Responders."

Sass Talk: Cannabis discussion continues

I took a couple of field trips this month related to learning more about cannabis and how it may affect our city if retail, commercial grows, testing, and edible production are implemented. I learned a lot and will share some of the highlights with you.

The first trip was to Breckenridge, a visit I piggybacked on top of a wedding I attended in Vail. I met with their Mayor, City Manager (formerly the police chief) and the assistant city manager. We met for two hours and our talk was primarily centered on their experiences with the legalization of cannabis in Breckenridge.

Let’s have an honest talk about suicide

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and you may have heard the phrase “each mind matters.”

Why does each mind matter? Mental health is something we all have. Just as our bodies need attention, our minds also need nourishment and care. Suicide rates are increasing and there is a relationship between mental illness and suicide. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), about 90 percent of people who die by suicide have experienced mental health issues.

Cyclist dies after collision with car in South Lake Tahoe

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is investigating a collision on Saturday night that claimed the life of a cyclist.

For unknown reasons, a male cyclist crossed the road in front of a car traveling westbound on Highway 50 between Johnson Boulevard and Takela Drive on May 13, 2017 at 7:40 p.m.

The cyclist was transported to Barton Hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival according to Sgt. Brandon Auxier of SLTPD. The rider's name and hometown is being withheld until notification of next-of-kin.

Man dies after fall from Harveys garage in Stateline

A 29-year-old man died Sunday morning after a fall from the upper levels of the parking structure at Harveys Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nev.

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) responded to the casino at 3:00 a.m. Sunday, March 26, 2017 when they were notified of a man with a traumatic injury found next to the parking garage.

When paramedics and deputies arrived they found the man, David Garcia, unresponsive and not breathing. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
