First storm of the season drops snow around Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/08/2020 - 10:47amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Law enforcement has been busy this morning with vehicles stuck in the snow around Lake Tahoe and on the surrounding mountain passes. Meyers is reporting 12" of snow, South Lake Tahoe 9.5", Genoa 7", Alpine Meadows 7" and the Gardnerville Ranchos up to 14".
This is a good day to stay off the roads. If driving, follow all controls, give yourself distance from the car in front of you, and take your time. The storm is moving out of the area but there will be some lingering snow until around 1:30 p.m.
Lake Tahoe ski resort commits to removing "squaw" from its name
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/25/2020 - 4:24pmOLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. - Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows announced Tuesday that it is making a commitment to change the name of the legendary California mountain destination and remove the word "squaw."
What the new name will be is unknown at this time and work to determine what it will be is beginning immediately. They will announce the new name after the winter season concludes in 2021.

Tuesday: Numbers Fire south of Gardnerville now at 18,000 acres and 0% containment

The recommended evacuations for the Bodie Flats and Pineview areas have been lifted. Only residents are allowed to these areas. Please drive safely, watch for emergency vehicles, and be ready for possible future instructions in an ever-changing situation.
Multiple local, state, and federal agencies continue to work on containing the fire using dozers, hand crews, and aircraft.

Lake Tahoe boat ramps to start opening up for boats not needing inspection

Each year, the LTBC honors those that have made significant advancements to promoting safer bicycling and walking opportunities for the Lake Tahoe-Truckee area.

"We believe this is in the best interest of our guests, employees, & local community," said Squaw Valley in a release.
Sugar Bowl has suspended operations until further notice due to the impacts of the coronavirus.
Other resorts will most likely be making similar announcements.

One dead, one seriously injured in Alpine Meadows avalanche
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/17/2020 - 2:24pmJanuary 18 update: In a statement, Alpine Meadows said the following: At approximately 10:16 a.m, Friday, an avalanche was reported in the area between Scott Chute and Promised Land near Scott Chair at Alpine Meadows, within an open area of the resort. A male skier sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 11am. A second male skier sustained severe lower-body injuries and was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Overnight lows and dry air allow for snowmaking operations to start around Lake Tahoe

Both cold temperatures and dry air combine to create ideal conditions for making snow.
Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort are all planning to take advantage of this week’s cool weather window to build a solid base for the upcoming winter season.

Power out to parts of Lake Tahoe's north and west shores
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/05/2019 - 10:08am1:45 p.m. Update - Power has been restored for all customers in North Lake Tahoe.
12:45 p.m. Update - A tree has been found in the primary source line and the backup line is currently being inspected by helicopter. Liberty Utilities has an estimated restoration time of 3:00 p.m. for the over 80 customers affected.
11:40 a.m. Update - Due to fire risk, Liberty Utilities crews must inspect the entire line before energizing the backup power source. The good news is they have commissioned a helicopter to expedite this process and there will have eyes in the air soon.
Lake Tahoe and Sierra area roadwork for September 1 - 6

Most traffic-interfering work will be limited from 6 a.m. Friday, August 30 through 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 3 for Labor Day weekend. Exceptions may be granted depending on the work and route.

Chain controls dropping as latest storm passes through Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/28/2019 - 9:08amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - More than a foot of snow fell overnight at ski resorts around Lake Tahoe, with a few inches falling at lake level. With the snow came road closures and chain controls, but sunny skies this morning are allowing road crews to finish plowing and those controls will be dropping during the day.
Sierra-at-Tahoe reports 16 inches of snow in the last 24 hours, with 15 inches at Heavenly, 14 inches at both Mt. Rose and Alpine Meadows and 13 inches at Kirkwood.
As of 10:00 a.m. Thursday, the following roads still have some sort of controls:
