It has been a very active hurricane and wildfire season and they have an urgent need for volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of those affected by disaster.

South Lake Tahoe fire displaces residents of three apartments
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/11/2019 - 4:09pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One apartment is a total loss and two others suffered major damage after a Thursday afternoon fire on Terry Lane in South Lake Tahoe.
At 12:07 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to a fully engulfed fire in the 3600 block of Terry Lane. Upon arrival, firefighters found a six-unit apartment building with one of the upstairs units on fire.
The occupants of all six units escaped the fire with no injuries after being evacuated by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

To start off the holiday, the City of South Lake Tahoe is organizing the annual 4th of July parade down Highway 50 from Ski Run Boulevard to Bijou Community Park on Al Tahoe Boulevard starting at 10:00 a.m.

The week ahead in South Lake Tahoe will be a clear one, but very cold as a strong high pressure system builds over the Sierra causing prolonged periods of strong morning inversions.
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a wind advisory for Lake Tahoe from 1:00 p.m. Monday to 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. Winds will be from the East 15-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Over the ridges will be as high as 80 mph.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer and more caring places to live.

Victim identified in South Lake Tahoe collision: Memorial set for Friday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/18/2017 - 2:45pmArthur "Rocky" Heether has been identified as the man killed as he rode his bike across Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, May 13, 2017. The 64-year-old man was struck by a vehicle.
Arthur, or Rocky as he was better known, was born in Oakland, California on January 26, 1053. He moved to the South Shore in the early 70's and worked construction on many Tahoe projects.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/09/2017 - 8:31am10:00 a.m. update 1/9/17: The City of South Lake Tahoe and the American Red Cross have closed their evacuation center in the city. One person arrived at the evacuation center last night.
"LTUSD and the Red Cross were excellent partners during last night’s storm event," said Tracy Franklin of the City of South Lake Tahoe.
The SLT Public Works department will be focusing on snow removal today. They are also working on getting the deep slushy water out of roadways. Franklin said the flood areas are still flooded and not receding at this point.
Evacuation Center opened in South Lake Tahoe

The City of South Lake Tahoe and American Red Cross have opened an evacuation center at South Tahoe High School in the school's student union.
It is located at 1735 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. The Recreation Swim Complex is not available as an evacuation center due to flooding at that location.

Those traveling to South Lake Tahoe, and those that live here, are being warned to be prepared for the storm which is slated to reach the Sierra overnight Saturday and last until Monday.
Broken water pipes could continue to be an issue with upcoming cold weather
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/31/2016 - 5:12pmThe forecast for South Lake Tahoe over the next seven days calls for cold temperatures, winds and several inches of snow, a recipe for an increased risk of broken pipes in homes and businesses in the area.
Last week, both a private home on Saddle Road and the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe suffered through broken pipes, a scene that the SLT Fire Rescue Department sees about two dozen times a year. Over the last seven years, SLTFR has responded to 168 calls for broken water pipes. Local plumbers have responded to hundreds of others as well.

The courses are being taught by City employee, Liz Terzian and will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will be trained and certified to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illness until EMS (emergency services) take over.

There were a total of 78 vehicles and approximately 200 people on foot either walking, biking, or dancing. American Legion Post 795 served as the parade marshals.
The City of South Lake Tahoe would like to say "Thank You" to all the parade participants, businesses and volunteers for making the 4th of July parade a fantastic community event!

Gardnerville fire displaces residents, injures two
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/14/2016 - 11:03pmA three alarm fire at an apartment complex in Gardnerville injured two people and displaced the residents.
At 5:40 p.m., East Fork Fire Department and Douglas County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the complex located at 1375 Lampe Lane and found the building fully engulfed. The called in several other fire safety agencies to assist including Tahoe Douglas, Carson City, Storey County, Reno, Truckee Meadows, Mono County and REMSA. 50 personnel responded along with 16 pieces of equipment.

Fire destroys condos in Tahoe Keys
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/03/2016 - 3:04pm5/4/16 11:00 a.m. update: The fire that swept through a Tahoe Keys condo complext on Tuesday caused an estimated $3 million in damage. Seven of the units suffered significant damage and a few other units in the surrounding condominiums have had some water and/or smoke damage. Firefighters arrived after receiving the 1:48 p.m. 911 call, and the fire was contained at approximately 4:10 p.m. Fire fighting personnel remained on the scene until 9:00 p.m.
City offering water safety and lifeguard classes in South Lake Tahoe

The American Red Cross Blended Learning Water Safety Instructor Class and participants must register for this class by April 28 at www.cslt.sportssignup.com. American Red Cross Certified Instructor Larry Phippen will be teaching the calls that trains candidates to teach courses and presentations in the Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program.

Warm Room opens doors in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/18/2015 - 9:07pmWe've seen them walking along the streets, sleeping in the forests or hanging outside of an all night market. The faces of South Lake Tahoe's homeless. Winter can be brutal on the homeless in town with below freezing temperatures, snow covered paths and no place to keep warm.
That is, until today.
The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless opened the doors of their new Warm Room on Friday, ready to take in their first visitors at 7:00 p.m. It is a safe and warm place for people over 18, getting them out of physically harmful conditions.
South Lake Tahoe home a complete loss after fire
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/19/2015 - 11:17pm4:40 p.m. update: A South Lake Tahoe home is a complete loss after a Thursday night fire which displace six residents and hospitalized two.
A South Lake Tahoe firefighter suffered from smoke inhalation and was transported to Barton where they were treated and released. The resident, a male, was at first sent to Barton but later transferred Code 3 to the U.C. Davis Burn Center with burns to his head and hands.
Lifeguard training being offered by the American Red Cross
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/27/2015 - 6:36pmLearning how to respond to aquatic emergencies is the focus of two American Red Cross Lifeguard training sessions being offered in South Lake Tahoe over the next few months.
Participants must be at least 15 years of age, be able to swim 300 yards continuously while demonstrating breathing control and rhythmic breathing, tread water for two minutes using the legs only, and complete a timed event. The class includes 7 hours and 25 minutes of online learning and 20 hours of hands-on instruction.
Late night motel fire in South Lake Tahoe displaces 10 people
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/09/2014 - 9:22pmTen people had to find other accommodations Monday night after a suspicious fire started at the Tahoe Pines Lodge and destroyed three units.
The lodge in South Lake Tahoe is located behind the Sno-Flake Drive Inn and is used primarily as a residential motel. The American Red Cross gave the displaced residents rooms at the Howard Johnson Express Inn for three days.
South Lake Tahoe's Recreation Complex now set up a a Red Cross Evacuation Center

Last night at 8 p.m., City officials were informed that the town of Kyburz might need to go into an evacuation advisory situation, and with Highway 50 closed at the time residents wouldn't have been able to go the evacuation centers to the west.
The Red Cross staff is manning their station at the Recreation Complex 24/7 until the need is passed.
Inaugural Wildfire Safety Expo to be Held in South Lake Tahoe

Several agencies are coming together on Saturday, June 21st for the first Wildfire Safety Expo in South Lake Tahoe.
The threat of wildfire is extremely high this fire season due to record drought conditions in the West. To provide information on creating home evacuation plans, preparing for fire, creating defensible space, the expo has been created.
The expo will be held in the TJ Maxx parking lot from noon to 3 p.m.

On January 5, 2012 from 2 to 5 p.m., the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center will host a winter-themed Family Science Day. Families are invited to explore the mysteries of snow and ice. Engaging activities will provide your child an opportunity to learn about the science of winter. Children will conduct scientific experiments, view snowflakes under a microscope, take a snow-core and determine the water content of snow, learn about wind chill and why some animals hibernate, and much more.
