Forest Service OKs South Shore Lake Tahoe fuels reduction

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has approved a project that will reduce wildfire risk to communities on Lake Tahoe's South Shore and restore the health of the area's forests. The South Shore Fuel Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration Project will thin trees and brush on more than 10,000 acres of national forest system land from the Nevada state line to Cascade Lake.

Ecological Restoration is key priority for Northern California forests

California’s landscapes are under siege from a host of threats. Catastrophic wildfire, climate change, invasive species and increasing human population put these delicate ecosystems at risk. The U.S. Forest Service has recognized and battled these threats for decades, but recently the agency recognized the need for a more focused approach on Ecological Restoration as the primary goal for all land management actions.

Big Meadow restoration continues along Scotts Lake Trail

The Forest Service will soon begin removing conifers (cone-bearing trees) from meadow, aspen groves and upland forest areas along Scotts Lake Trail, off Big Meadow Trailhead near Luther Pass on Hwy. 89. The project should not affect access to the trail, but the Forest Service is asking that users remain on the trail at all times. A contractor will use crews with chainsaws for the thinning project, which could begin tomorrow.

Scavenger Hunt Today at Aspen Hollow

Aspen Hollow Landscape Nursery, South Lake Tahoe's place to find all things needed and desired for high-altitude gardening, will hold a scavenger hunt today from 1 to 4 p.m. The public is invited and there will be prizes sent home with the winners. The hunt is open to adults and children. The nursery is located at 541 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe. Call (530) 542-3180.

Kokanee Salmon Festival continues today

Celebrate fall Lake Tahoe style, with quaking aspen, crisp air and red Kokanee salmon that spawn annually in Taylor Creek. The U.S. Forest Service hosts the annual Kokanee Salmon Festival at the Lake Tahoe Visitor Center at Taylor Creek, which continues today, Sunday, Oct. 2. Come participate in this family fun festival which has become one of the most interesting and educational events in Northern California.

New landmark installed at Lake Tahoe Golf Course

After two months of sweat, scrapes, carving and lots of attention paid to detail, a new sign went up Tuesday at Lake Tahoe Golf Course, marking a generation of landmarks that bring in an all-encompassing natural environment perspective.
With the design furnished by Lake Tahoe Golf Course, Jeanette Minier developed, constructed and hand-carved the sign which is now perched at the entrance of the golf course at 2500 Emerald Bay Road. Final touches with masonry continues.
