South Lake Tahoe Police report big jump in vehicle thefts

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Followers of South Tahoe Now's police log have long known that the number of local auto thefts has been a concern of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) for the last several years, but they are now seeing a disturbing trend with a large spike in the crime over the past year.

In 2018 SLTPD investigated 70 auto thefts, with 60 of them being crimes committed in the city limits. This reflects as 30 percent increase in the thefts in the last two years, 52 percent since 2008.

Auto thefts and burglaries continue to target South Lake Tahoe residents

There has been a rash of suspicious circumstances in the Gardner Mountain area over the last week, ones that remind residents to lock their cars to prevent petty theft and other crimes of opportunity.

On March 19 between 4:04 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., 10 calls went into the South Lake Tahoe Police Department about suspicious activity on Gardner Street, Clement Street, Julie Lane, Tata Lane and Sand Harbor Road. In each incident, dome lights were on several cars as if some person(s) attempted to open them. In one incident the truck's doors were open and a stereo was stolen.

SLT Police Chief on Officer Hounsell, auto theft, violent crime and winter driving

Rash of auto thefts in South Lake Tahoe

In just three days, five cars were reported stolen in South Lake Tahoe.

On Thursday, September 10, a man who lives in the 2400 block of William Avenue called police to report his car stolen. When police arrived, they found out the man had lent the car to someone who hadn't returned it.

The following day, a white Ford F250 with a rack was reported stolen in the 1000 block of William. It has not been recovered and there are no suspects. The Nevada license plate number is NRC917.

Three cars were stolen on Saturday, September 12.

Police Chief’s Monthly Report to the South Lake Tahoe Community

Property Crime: Several South Lake Tahoe businesses were disrupted over the past three months (June/July/August) by 19 different smash and grab commercial burglaries. Typically, these burglaries are occurring in the early morning hours (between 3am-9am. The offender(s) have broken windows or glass doors to gain access to these businesses across town. The crimes have not been centralized in any one particular area, although several have occurred in the area of the Y and some of the same businesses have been victimized more than once.

3 Cars Stolen in 16 Hours in South Lake Tahoe; 3 Suspects Arrested

Three Placerville 18 year olds have been arrested in connection with three auto thefts that took place in South Lake Tahoe between 7 p.m. March 31 and 11 a.m. April 1. The trio is also suspected in stealing contents from other cars as well.

Brian Barnes, Elija Kidwell and Sean Murphy were arrested and book into El Dorado County Jail on felony charges of auto theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracy for at least one of the auto thefts and to some of the property thefts.

South Lake Tahoe police reports recent surge in auto thefts, attempted thefts

During the nine days of July, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has investigated several thefts and attempted thefts of vehicles in the City. The targeted victim vehicles appear to be vans in particular.
