Marjorie Louise Daum ~ 1938 - 2020

The well known local businesswoman was 82.
Marjorie was as a very kind and sweet person, always greeting everyone with a cheerful smile and a hug. Her strong courage, humility, honesty and faith guided her successful path through life.
She was born on February 24, 1938 and moved with her family to South Lake Tahoe in 1947 where they lived at the Al Tahoe Pines Resort. The family's marine service station was where the current Globin's building and Pick 6 are currently located.

The benefits of volunteering go beyond lending a helping hand. Studies show volunteers have significant health benefits such as lower blood pressure, decreased likelihood of depression, and an increased sense of purpose and life satisfaction.
Volunteers are the bedrock of Barton Health. More than 55 years ago, our hospital was founded by volunteers, and the spirit of helping to support our community’s health thrives within our organization to this day.
Assembly line of love and tradition behind famous Barton Auxiliary Cheese Balls

One creamy swipe across a piece of sourdough bread or dipped with a cracker, and anyone with a discerning palate can tell the difference between store-bought and these homemade delights.
But what is in that tasty swipe is a guarded secret.

"The bank is satisfied," said Cody Bass, executive director of TWC. "They have withdrawn receivership because they no longer own the building."
Barton Auxiliary gives $16,000 in scholarships to local students

Barton Auxiliary awards $76,500 to students and Birthing Center
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/19/2017 - 8:20pmSouth Lake Tahoe, Calif. – Thirteen students were recently awarded $19,000 in scholarships by the Barton Auxiliary which also gave $$57,500 to the Barton Family Birthing Center for additional services and equipment.
The awards came during a recognition lunch on June 12.
Barton Auxiliary is a group of volunteers who support Barton Hospital, its patients, and the community through. In 2016, Auxiliary volunteers raised funds from The Attic and gift shop sales, holiday fundraisers, and personal donations to fund their recent awards.

Barton Auxiliary gives out scholarships to help those pursuing medical careers
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/19/2016 - 8:51pmFourteen students from Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley received $19,500 in scholarships from the Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for their academic achievement and plans to pursue a career in medicine or science.
“It is our hope to give a head start to our future doctors, nurses, physical therapists, medical techs, biologists, psychologists, and first responders,” says Joanne Donmoyer, an Auxiliary and Scholarship Committee member. "The medical and science professions are very important in Tahoe, and we would be so pleased if some of our young people returned and served our community.”

South Lake Tahoe breast cancer survivor shares her story
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/09/2015 - 3:14pmSeptember 11 evokes a different meaning to South Lake Tahoe resident Christine O’Farrell. In 2002, on the one-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Christine was on the operating table at Barton Memorial Hospital facing a new threat: cancer.
Christine had been diagnosed with an aggressive case of breast cancer. At the time, she was 42 years old and working at Barton’s Home Health and Hospice for quality assurance and infection prevention. Her three children were 14, 12, and 9.

July 31, 2015 - 12:00pm BloodSource will hold a South Lake Tahoe Community blood drive to meet the community need for blood and blood products on July 31 from 12:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Center Gymnasium at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd.
For every pint of blood donated, BloodSource will donate a pound of pet food to the Lake Tahoe Humane Society.

Barton Auxiliary giver $13,500 to local students

Estate of longtime volunteer goes to Barton Health
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/12/2015 - 8:46pmWhen Dan Kerr passed away last June, he left behind a legacy with the Barton Health Auxiliary. He coordinated the Barton Auxiliary Blood Drive held every other month, donated more than 26 gallons of blood since 1981, and served as Auxiliary President for six terms.
Now Dan Kerr has left a new mark. From his estate, he donated $219,097.92, divided equally, to the Barton Auxiliary and Barton Foundation.

Patty Olson receives Spirit of Philanthropy Award
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/05/2014 - 11:28pmEvery year, the Barton Foundation recognizes a philanthropist that stands out above the rest. This year, the Foundation has selected Patty Olson as the beneficiary of their Spirit of Philanthropy award.
Patty moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1950 and was instrumental in in the creation of Barton Memorial Hospital. She was a founding member of the Barton Auxiliary and helped organize the Auxiliary's first fundraiser for the hospital. She hosted many other Barton fundraising events at Young's Bijou Lodge, which she and her husband Neal Olson owned and operated.

Letter: Girl Scout Gives Back to Patients in Need

The project began after realizing the difficulty for community members without permanent residence to obtain a library card and access books. Therefore, I created a mini-library in the lobby of the Barton Community Health Center to provide patients access to books and reading material. With the help of the Barton Auxiliary, The Barton Attic Thrift Store, and generous donations from employees and community members, the library has been fully stocked since April.

Barton Auxiliary thanks Dan Kerr
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/15/2014 - 10:53pmThe Barton Health and South Lake Tahoe community have lost a special, irreplaceable friend. On June 27, Dan Kerr passed away. He was 76 years old.
Dan is probably best known as the Sacramento Chairman of the Blood Drive. Dan donated more than 26 gallons of blood. Since 1981, he has coordinated blood drive efforts in South Lake Tahoe with the Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. The South Lake Tahoe Blood Drive still takes place every other month and, with Dan’s coordination, celebrated its 48th year anniversary in June.
Barton Health's Festival of Trees and Lights Successful

The six-day event is a collaborative effort between Barton Health staff, community and Auxiliary volunteers, and sponsors. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, decorated a tree or a wreath, donated an auction item, or sponsored one of our many events! A special thanks to Barton Foundation’s volunteer steering committee who worked all year long to ensure the event was a magical experience.
Barton Foundation golf tournament raises more than $14,000 for Community Health Endowment
Submitted by Editor on Sat, 07/13/2013 - 11:50amBarton Foundation's 19th annual Golf Tournament and fundraiser held on Thursday, June 20 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course raised more than $14,000 for Barton’s Community Health Endowment fund. The Hawaiian themed, “Tiki Tee Off and Lei Up Luau Golf Tournament hosted a field of 108 golfers and 160 luau attendees – complete with a roasted pig, raffle prizes and a performance by the Ukuleles of Tahoe.
