Column: The importance of breast cancer screening
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/01/2020 - 7:17pmThe reminder to schedule a breast cancer screening test comes on strong during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. This month, let each splash of pink you see be an encouragement to get screened with a self-exam, physician exam, or a mammogram.
It’s also a good time to get a feel for your own unique breast density, and establish a baseline to help identify warning signs of breast cancer, including:
- A lump in the breast or armpit
- Swelling or thickening of all or part of the breast
- Dimpling or skin irritation of breast skin
- Localized, persistent breast pain
Column: The importance of annual women's health exams
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/25/2018 - 12:49pmOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but breast cancer is not the only screening women should care about. All women should have an annual health-screening exam. Having an annual health care visit is a great opportunity to take charge of your health. Routine health care visits can help find problems early or prevent health problems before they occur. If problems are found early, they may be easier to treat and less likely to pose serious risks to your health.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer affects 1 out of 8 women. This is a growing concern, since many breast cancers are found after the disease has been developing for years. Tahoe Women's Care is the region's only OB/GYN practice to offer the HALO® breast test. Designed to detect abnormal cells HALO® may help identify precancerous breast cells up to eight years earlier than might be found on a mammogram.
