Tahoe Arts Project cancels two biggest fundraisers - starting donation drive
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/31/2020 - 8:10pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dancing With the Tahoe Stars for 2021 has been canceled and Music on the Beach 2020 was canceled, both of which are the Tahoe Arts Project's biggest fundraisers of the year.
During these uncertain times the only thing certain is that South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits need help from the community more than ever.

As the effects from the coronavirus pandemic continue to affect families with job and income loss, community members rise to the occasion with several places to volunteers and donate.
One of those opportunities is with Steph Warren and the Altruism Project on Fridays at Bijou Community School.

This is TAP’s major fundraiser for the year and all proceeds go towards professional performing arts programs in the schools and community. Over 4,500 K-12th grade students benefit from TAP’s programs.

But not to panic if your tickets weren't purchased - they will be live streaming the event for the very first time!

The local celebrities met their professional partners Tuesday night during a party at the Hard Rock Casino.
"Everyone is super excited about it," said Tahoe Arts Project Executive Director Peggy Blowney.

South Tahoe High ALLY Club keeps track of SnowGlobe lost and found items

To help with that at the SnowGlobe Music Festival, the South Tahoe High School Ally Club was recruited to operate the Lost & Found booth at the event. In return, Chad Donnelly, the founder and CEO of SnowGlobe, gives the club a donation to help with the club's activities.
It happened - Ms. Heidel not only meets Duran Duran, she's brought on stage!

A life-long dream came true for South Tahoe High English teacher Bridey Heidel when she met Simon LeBon of Duran Duran on Friday night during their outdoor concert at Harveys. Not only did see meet him during a personal one-on-one back stage before the concert, she was also brought on stage for hugs, holding hands, a kiss on the cheek, and a song.
"I feel like I'm going to explode," said Bridey after meeting LeBon and waiting to go on stage. She had just spent time with him in the backstage sitting room, getting to chat with the lead singer and others.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The national Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is fighting for equality in the upcoming midterm elections and to gather support locally, no matter which side of the aisle one votes, an event is being held at Sidellis Brewery on Thursday, October 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
HRC is working with the ALLY clubs at both South Tahoe High School (STHS) and Lake Tahoe Community College to engage LGBTQ voices and mobilize pro-equality voters to hold lawmakers accountable.
STHS grad Rose Campion leaves USC on a high note as 2018 Valedictorian
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/09/2018 - 6:28pmA South Lake Tahoe graduate is heading to the podium at the University of Southern California (USC) on Friday, draped with honors cords, award medallions and a pin that will signify her as the 2018 Class Valedictorian.
Rose Campion, 22, will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, and a Bachelor of Arts in History. The double major will leave her USC career behind with a 3.98 GPA.
In a school of 18,000 students and around 5,000 other soon-to-be graduates, it would seem almost impossible for a young woman from South Lake Tahoe to end up in the top spot on graduation day.
South Tahoe High gets good news - Fully accredited until 2022
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/09/2018 - 5:00pmSouth Tahoe High School received great news from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Commission with confirmation that the school is fully accredited through June 2022. When the accreditation team left the campus in March they had nothing but glowing reports for the staff and school, but the final decision was mailed to the school May 3.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/20/2018 - 4:07pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The three member visiting accreditation committee from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) finished up their review at South Tahoe High School (STHS) today, parting with very positive comments about their experience.
"It is amazing what I've seen in two years," said Cheryl Townsend, Director of The Reach School in Sebastapol, Calif., and the only member of the accreditation team that originally reviewed the school in 2016. "There is a great level of intensity and quality at this school, give yourselves a hand."
Reno-Tahoe Odyssey run to go through South Lake Tahoe Friday
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/02/2017 - 7:57amThe 13th annual Reno Tahoe Odyssey will take runners from Reno, north of Verdi, down to Boca Reservoir, Truckee, down to South Lake Tahoe, over to Virginia City and back to Reno starting Friday, June 2. The event this year is 174.5 miles long, has 242 teams which split up 36 legs of the race, and they don't stop as the sun drops, they run all night long.

Founder of South Tahoe High Ally Club returns to speak to students

"It was a scary, dark place at the time," said Alex Boyar, who 'came out of the closet' at age 14. "Its a much different environment today."
Boyar, along with his mother Dr. Virginia Berry and sister Christina Boyar, stopped by South Tahoe High Thursday to talk to the students of Ally, the Gay-Straight Alliance Club at the school that he co-founded in 2005.
South Lake Tahoe woman facing brain cancer with friends, family and hugs

Those powerful words come from South Lake Tahoe local Krista Kline Carson.
The 1989 South Tahoe High graduate, wife, mother and wellness coordinator for Barton University, is battling cancer after a tumor removed from her brain was found to be Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme, one of the fastest growing brain cancers. On Monday, January 18 she begins a six week regime of radiation and chemotherapy.

The dynamic South Tahoe High English teacher, and advisor to the school's ALLY Club, has had a dream to meet Simon Le Bon, the lead singer of the popular pop group who's top charting tunes include Come Undone, Hungry Life a Wolf and A View to a Kill.

Why you ask?
To understand we need to take a step back in time to the year 1983 when a young Bridey was in 7th grade. She had found the band Duran Duran at a very difficult time in her young life and they helped her cope with a life full of trauma as well as moving from town to town. By the time she graduated high school she had been in 26 schools.

For the 18 people who showed up, it wasn't all about breaking a record, it was about starting off the new year right with an hour of exercise. They walked along the new bike trail from Sawmill Pond to South Tahoe High School and back.

"The project focuses on the power of words and the fact that they can negatively affects all of us," said Principal Chad Houck. "These words are often the language of bullies, the reason kids miss school, and sometimes even the reason our students find little worth in themselves."
