For snow that has been measured in inches so far this winter, a big change hits Lake Tahoe and the Sierra starting Tuesday night when it will be measured in feet.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has now upgraded the storm warnings to blizzard level.

A significant winter storm is looking increasingly likely by late Tuesday through at least Thursday according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Additional waves of moderate to heavy snowfall are possible through next weekend.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and California State Parks have joined together in an outreach campaign to provide simple actions to increase the enjoyment of the outdoors experience. Staying local, planning ahead, social distancing guidelines, not leaving trash and following the posted rules are just some of the ways to enjoy Lake Tahoe and the Sierra.

This is a popular area each fall due to the Kokanee Salmon run and heightened wildlife sightings and was closed to both protect bears and discourage large gatherings. The Visitor Center has seasonally closed.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Seven hundred people will be the recipients of the next Overland Meat & Seafood "Tacos for Tahoe" giveaway on Monday, October 26 starting at 10:00 a.m.
Brian Cohen, owner of the popular market in South Lake Tahoe, will be continuing what they did three different times at the beginning of the pandemic. At the first ground beef giveaway Cohen went through all 1,000 pounds of meat in 90 minutes.
This time he giving away 1,400 pounds.
"Many people are still struggling in our town," he said. "We are here to help out the community."

Lake Tahoe Christmas Tree permits available November 16 online

Some fire and use restrictions continue in the Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/24/2020 - 1:09pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - A fire ban continues in the Lake Tahoe Basin. On non-red flag days, home use of BBQs with propane or gas are allowed. All charcoal and wood fires are banned at this time. With all of the recent closures of forests due to fire danger, here is an update of what is open around Lake Tahoe:
National Forest trails, trailheads, beaches in Tahoe Basin are open for day-use only.
All camping, overnighting is temporarily prohibited, including camping in Desolation Wilderness, Meiss Country, Pacific Crest, and Tahoe Rim trails.
USFS campgrounds remain closed.
Type 3 fire team takes control of 1,667 acre Fork Fire
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/24/2020 - 11:10amControl of the Fork Fire transferred to a local Type 3 team today. The fire was remapped and is 1,667 acres and is 70 percent contained and is located north of Pollock Pines and west of Lake Tahoe, burning in the Crystal Basin/Gerle Creek area. Strategy on the fire will remain the same with emphasis on clearing contingency lines distant from the main edge of the fire in case the fire begins to move.
Forest and fire managers would like people to be aware that while the fire closures are being reduced, there is still fire activity in the area.
Fork Fire 1,752 acres and 61% contained
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/20/2020 - 8:54pmThe Fork Fire burning west of Lake Tahoe, north of Pollock Pines continues to be 1,752 acres in size but is now 61 percent contained. The Southwest Area Incident Management Team 4 has been in command of the Fork Fire since September 11 and will be handing that duty over to another team on Thursday, September 24.
The containment lines are to the north, east and south sides of the Fork Fire and fire continues to burn in the steep Rubicon drainage area.
351 personnel are assigned to the fire at this time.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/18/2020 - 5:12pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - National Forest trails, trailheads, beaches and other day-use areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin will re-open for day-use only beginning Saturday, Sep. 19, 2020. Camping and overnight stays will not be permitted, and campgrounds will remain closed. Resorts will reopen for day-use only. Emergency Fire Restrictions will remain in effect through Nov. 30. I’ve attached the Forest Orders for your awareness.
The prohibition of the use of any ignition source on all National Forest System lands (campfires, gas stoves, etc.) throughout California remains in place.

The Conservancy intends these closures to complement similar temporary closures of National Forest Lands to protect the public and firefighters during this time of unprecedented and historic fire conditions.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/09/2020 - 12:53pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to dangerous fire conditions, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Regional Forester Randy Moore has just announced that ALL National Forests in California will close Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. until further notice. This order includes the California and Nevada sides of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. On Monday, eight National Forests were closed and now an additional ten from the state have been added to the list.
Creek Fire grows to over 143,000 acres
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/08/2020 - 2:53pmThe Creek Fire burning south of Yosemite near Shaver Lake has grown to 143,929 acres. The fire, which started Friday night, continues to grow under extreme conditions causing crowning and wind driven runs and long range spotting. There is no containment at this time.
Smoke from the Creek Fire has filled the Lake Tahoe Basin for the past three days.
USFS: Backcountry areas closed to camping except PCT and Desolation Wilderness

There is now an emergency camping prohibition that goes into effect on Tuesday, September 8, 2020.

Heavy smoke from the Creek Fire over South Lake Tahoe Saturday
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/05/2020 - 5:14pmSUNDAY UPDATE 11:00 a.m.: Eight hundred personnel are currently fighting the Creek Fire which has grown to 45,500 acres.
The Creek Fire a fast-moving fire burning on both Districts of the Forest. The fire which started near the communities of Big Creek and Huntington Lake, moved very quickly prompting several evacuations. Early Saturday afternoon the fire crossed the San Joaquin River and made a run into the Mammoth Pool area. Prompting some members of the public to shelter in place near Wagner’s Store and Campground.
El Dorado County moves to next reopening tier Sept 21 if COVID-19 cases remain low
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/01/2020 - 8:29amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County will be able to move to the next colored tier on September 21 if COVID-19 cases remain under four cases per day average and test positivity stays below five percent for two consecutive seven-day periods.
The County started off the new color-tiered reopening plan in the Red/Substantial tier due to data from the weeks of August 5-11 and August 12-18.

Douglas County launches grant program to help local small businesses

From September 8 - October 6, the County will be accepting applications. The grants will be awarded on an as needed and first come first served basis. For details on eligible businesses and funding amounts, and to preview the application, please visit the Nevada Association of Counties website.
Slink Fire burning southwest of Topaz Lake grows to over 2,200 acres

The Sheep Fire near Honey Lake is 29,517 acres and 38 percent contained, the Loyalton Fire is at 98 percent containment and 47,029 acres. The North Complex burning in Lassen and Plumas forests is 61,093 acres and 37 percent contained.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/27/2020 - 2:54pmMany have experienced the trip aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive from Carson City to Virginia City, or the annual Polar Express train rides, but with COVID-19 closures these experiences have not been available for 2020.
Now people can pedal their way through history aboard a Freedom Railbike along the historic Virginia & Truckee (V&T) train route into the Carson River Canyon along an exciting, curved, and gradual two percent grade track system to the historic Eureka Mill rest area.

Reminder: Two-week full closure of US50 scheduled for Echo Summit Project
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/18/2020 - 1:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a delay in getting materials in 2019, Caltrans has scheduled a full closure of U.S. Highway 50 for the Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct Replacement Project for two weeks beginning Friday, Sept. 18. After the delay last year, the contractor on the project was going to install the bridge girders in June of 2020, but many wanted that timeframe postponed due to the the opening of tourist season after COVID-related closures this past spring.
Lightning-caused Loyalton Fire now at 36,295 acres and 5% containment
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/17/2020 - 10:06amLOYALTON, Calif. - Fire officials with the Tahoe National Forest say the Loyalton Fire has now burned 36,295 acres and is at five percent containment as of 8:30 a.m. Monday.
They have determined the fire is lightning caused. It started Friday afternoon east of the town of Loyalton. It spread quickly resulting in the closures of US395 and SR70, both of which have reopened.
A forest closure was issued by the Humboldt-Toyabe National Forest for the Dog Valley area due to the fire's southern spread.
Right turn restrictions during peak travel days in Meyers approved by committee, on to supervisors

It is north and east adjacent to the areas of Beckwourth Pass and Hallelujah Junction.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Upper Truckee River Marsh restoration update and video

This will enrich native fish and bird habitat and act as a natural pollution filter that will improve water quality before it reaches Lake Tahoe.
