Well known South Lake Tahoe artist Peter Darvas injured in Pioneer Trail fire
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 09/18/2012 - 7:30pmWell-known South Shore Lake Tahoe artist Peter Darvas was being treated at Barton Memorial Hospital on Tuesday evening after he tried putting out a house fire on Pioneer Trail.
Authorities said the fire, reported shortly before 6 p.m., was at the corner of Edna and Pioneer Trail. Darvas’ home, according to city records, is at 3128 Pioneer Trail – at that corner.
According to a message from City Manager Nancy Kerry to Councilman Tom Davis, Darvas was in the house and tried to put the fire out. He was being treated at Barton Memorial Hospital.

Saturday is Free Fishing Day in California

You will be able to fish wherever you like in California, without the need for a fishing license.

Report: Climate impacts Lake Tahoe clarity and health

Despite an extreme weather year, overall clarity at Lake Tahoe improved in 2011. Yet underlying trends portray a more complex picture of the Lake Tahoe ecosystem, according to the annual “Tahoe: State of the Lake Report 2012,” released today by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at the University of California, Davis.

Forest Service ecologist warns of potential for 'super fires' in California
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 07/20/2012 - 11:27amIntense and deeply destructive "super fires," like Colorado's current Waldo Canyon fire, which has claimed two lives and burned 350 homes, are almost assured in Northern California's future, according to a U.S. Forest Service scientist.
"Typically we're seeing an earlier fire season and that fire season is lasting longer," said Malcolm North, plant ecologist with the Pacific Southwest Research Station of the U.S. Forest Service. North works out of the station's Davis office.

Lake Tahoe becomes ground zero for climate change study

Data suggest climate change is bringing an increased risk of more severe forest fires, but warming temperatures may cause other complex ecosystem changes. Local agencies are already planning ways to mitigate and adapt, but making policy based on models that show global trends over the next century is not an easy task.

Instead leaders agreed to wait 90 days, until Oct. 1, to decide if interim City Manager Nancy Kerry should get the job. In the meantime, a firm was selected to do a background check on Kerry. Council members repeatedly noted and praised Kerry as being ethical and knows the city and its functions and is therefore trustworthy, is the most qualified for the job and that doing a search for anyone else is too costly and therefore unnecessary. Councilman Tom Davis, who voted no, said for public transparency and ethical reasons, there ought to be a search, even though Kerry is the general favorite among the council.

Tahoe Yellow Cress planted in partnership with high school, private business and conservation groups

Edgewood Companies is participating in a volunteer program called the Tahoe Yellow Cress Stewardship Program and has been assisting with inventory surveys as far back as 1979.

“With all of the added benefits of less pain, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and a reduced risk of infections, the single-incision allows us to do cholecystectomies via one incision in the umbilicus (navel), which is nearly invisible after it heals,” Dr. Welker said.
