Vail Resorts shutting down all North American operations, including those in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. Vail Resorts announced Saturday that they are suspending the operations of all of their North American mountain resorts, retail stores and corporate offices beginning tomorrow, March 15, 2020, for at least one week (through March 22) to assess the rest of the season.

This includes Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Resort and Northstar in the Lake Tahoe area.

Kirkwood Mountain Resorts hosted their second 2018 ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishment’ sponsorship dinner on Monday, March 19 at St. Theresa Grace Hall. Kirkwood’s Guest Services crew members Natasha Buffo, Dan Deemer and Richie Monroe traveled all the way from the Kirkwood Resort area to arrive at Grace Hall at 3:00 p.m. to lend their customer service skills and helping hands to the Bread & Broth volunteers.

Kirkwood Resort fined over $750k for dumping asphalt

Kirkwood Mountain Resort has been fined $754,732 after their snow removal practices resulted in asphalt pavement grindings to get into drainages that flow into Kirkwood Creek and Kirkwood Meadows during the winter of 2015-16.

The financial settlement was with the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board over the alleged violations of the federal Clean Water Act, the Board announced on December 28.

Kirkwood and Vail Resorts face steep fines for dumping asphalt into creek

Kirkwood Mountain and Vail Resorts are facing steep fines after an anonymous complaint led Central Valley Water Board officials to investigate water quality impacts after it was found that asphalt grindings from parking lots at the resort ended up in Kirkwood Creek during snow removal operations during the 2015-16 season.

It was found during the inspection that the asphalt grindings, commonly spread on parking lots to assist with traction during icy and snowy conditions, ended up in Kirkwood Creek and other sensitive areas.

Kirkwood to Offer Free Backcountry Awareness Clinics at San Francisco Sports Basement Stores

Expedition Kirkwood will be holding free backcountry awareness clinics at the Sports Basement stores at the Presidio and on Bryant Street the weekend of Dec. 2-3.

“Most incidents that occur in the backcountry happen because people are not prepared to be there,” explains Jon Copeland, Director of Expedition Kirkwood. “Two of our goals at Expedition Kirkwood are to educate people on making smart decisions when in the backcountry and to train them on how to make a predetermined plan.”

Bijou Community Park is Revamped During 4th Annual Vail Resorts Echo Day

Employees of Heavenly and Kirkwood Mountain resorts and their friends and family members teamed together for the 4th Annual Vail Resorts Echo Day on Sunday, September 21st. The 312 participants volunteered to revamp Bijou Community Park, putting in a combined effort of 936 volunteer hours Saturday. Volunteers laid sod to build a family picnic area, painted signs and picnic tables, planted shrubs, cleared bushes, redistributed wood chips, resurfaced the skate park, raked the volleyball courts, picked up trash, and cleaned up the bicycle path along Al Tahoe Boulevard.

Bobby Brown Dominates 2,750 ft Long Slopestyle Course Built at Kirkwood

As the chairlifts at Kirkwood Mountain Resort came to a halt this past spring, the Snow Park Technologies (SPT) snowcats were powering up. For twenty days, an SPT crew of seven logged 1,200 hours building the slopestyle course of Bobby Brown’s dreams. Three years ago the professional skier, who is based in Denver, CO, was asking friends, “What’s next for slopestyle skiing?” The result is Red Bull Megaslope, a 2,750-foot long course that flawlessly incorporates six epic features winding across the natural terrain of the mountain.

Lake Tahoe local ski pass gains access to Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood

As Labor Day weekend nears, Vail Resorts now offers season passes for the 2012-13 season. The Lake Tahoe Local Pass offers access to more than 263 trails, 14 terrain parks and 10,270 acres of terrain at Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood in California and Nevada. Ski or ride more than four days in one season and, priced at $419, the Tahoe Local Pass pays for itself, then ski or ride for free the rest of the season.
