Chautauqua of Mark Twain by McAvoy Layne

Event Date:
June 22, 2016 - 6:30pm

Mark Twain will share how, as Samuel Clemens, he traveled from the Mississippi River to Nevada Territory and why he came west. He will describe what he saw when he got here in 1861, and if he really took his pen name "Mark Twain" while living in Nevada. This lighthearted, humorous, yet rigorously researched Chautauqua presentation examines Nevada through the eyes of one of America’s greatest literary figures. Offering fresh insight into the much loved writer, this presentation is intended to motivate the reading of good books and inspire the pursuit of creative writing.

From its 19th century beginnings, cowboys and ranching have shared work, words and music there. You’d be hard pressed to find a better place to celebrate the unique forms of Cowboy Music, Cowboy Poetry, Old West history and the Western lifestyle.

Tahoe Queen gets stuck: 258 passengers transported to safety

What started off as a leisurely 90 minute cruise on the Tahoe Queen turned into quite the adventure for passengers on board Monday afternoon.

The boat was about 30 minutes into its Emerald Bay cruise when it became stuck on a sandbar. At about 3:30 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Fire Department received a call that the Tahoe Queen was stuck off the Regan Beach shore. It is not known at this time why emergency personnel weren't called to the scene until 90 minutes after the Tahoe Queen got stuck.
