Opening ceremony Tuesday for new Tahoe Rim trail link to Mt. Houghton

Over 100 volunteers spent 2,000 hours this summer helping to finish the last leg of a multi-year project that connects the Tahoe Rim Trail to Northern Nevada communities.

On Tuesday, October 14, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) will celebrate the completion of a new trail to the summit of Mt. Houghton from the Rim Trail at Relay Ridge. Volunteers built .7 miles of trail from Mt. Rose to the Thomas Creek Trailhead which increases recreational access in the Mt. Rose area.

Tahoe Rim Trail Association has events left to enjoy this summer

What began as a dream in 1977 is now a 165-mile trail around Lake Tahoe for hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers. Retired U.S. Forest Service officer Glen Hampton researched and explored places along the perimeter for the trail to go. He nvestigated aged pathways used by early pioneers, Basque Shepherds, and the Washoe People. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA)was founded in 1981 and construction on the trail began three years later.
