Tahoe Parents Nursery School to have permanent home at Lake Tahoe Community College

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After nearly 61 years in existence, the Tahoe Parents Nursery School (TPNS) will finally have a permanent home in South Lake Tahoe. It will be located on the campus of Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC).

LTCC is hosting a small group of physically distanced dignitaries and campus leaders to help break ground and usher in the new Early Learning Center on Wednesday, June 17 at 3:00 p.m. This event will be live-streamed at www.ltcc.edu/measuref.

LTCC expands child care to evening hours to help student parents

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For some students, there are many barriers to their being able to get a college degree, one of them being affordable child care. A recent move by the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is helping remove that barrier by having extended hours on Monday and Tuesday evenings so parents who are LTCC students can attend classes and/or study.

To start off the holiday, the City of South Lake Tahoe is organizing the annual 4th of July parade down Highway 50 from Ski Run Boulevard to Bijou Community Park on Al Tahoe Boulevard starting at 10:00 a.m.

Successful Mother's Day Diaper Drive

Choices for Children would like to thank the community for their amazing support of the 2019 Healthy Bottom Line Mother's Day Diaper Drive. Throughout the month of May, donation boxes that had been decorated by our local Boys and Girls Club members were located throughout the community. We received thousands of diapers that will be distributed to our community's youngest and most vulnerable residents.

17 set to retire from Lake Tahoe Unified School District with 465 years of combined service

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Eleven teachers and six instructional and library assistants are retiring this year from Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD). Together they have worked in education for 465 years.

Water safety Instructor and Lifeguard classes to begin soon in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Classes will begin soon for those interested in becoming a lifeguard or swim instructor in South Lake Tahoe. Offered by the American Red Cross, both classes are open to community members and will be taught at the Recreation and Swim Complex.

State schools chief visits California's smallest district - Alpine County

California's State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson is wrapping up his final term by touring some of the state's schools.

In just a few days he went from visiting a school in Los Angeles with an enrollment of 4,000 to touring Alpine County Schools and the Diamond Valley Elementary School campus, in particular, which has 80 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

“It is a small school in numbers but mighty in its focus and learning,” said Torlakson in Alpine County on Sept. 20.

A tribute to a mentor, a friend and teacher to hundreds of South Lake Tahoe children

Judy Simmons, or “Teacher Judy” as we all knew her, left us on August 28, 2018 to become an angel above. She was a teacher, friend, mentor, listener, consoler and counselor to hundreds and hundreds of children and parents over the last 40 years. Teacher Judy was the co-director of Tahoe Parents Nursery school (TPNS) for 30 years and an educator of the youngest students in our community for more than 40 years. She loved her job, she loved the preschoolers, their families and her co-workers. Each became her friend.

New South Lake Tahoe daycare center opens up for infants to age 13

Pequeños Rascals Daycare has moved into a new center in South Lake Tahoe after operating at a local home for 15 years. Filling a big need on the South Shore, the owners are offering quality care for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children up to age 13.

It's not just babysitting either. It's care with a heavy emphasis on education, music, art, physical activity and family.

The public is invited to see for themselves when Pequeños holds an open house on Saturday, March 18 from noon to 5:00 p.m. They are located at 3336 Sandy Way in South Lake Tahoe.

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District trustees will continue their discussion into the future use of the old Al Tahoe school site during a study session prior to their normal board meeting Tuesday.

LTUSD begins study into what Al Tahoe Elementary could look like in future

The conversation has started on what to do at the former site of Al Tahoe Elementary School after the passage of Proposition 51 in the November election which will create $9 billion in funding for the state's schools. During a study session at the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's (LTUSD) Board of Trustee meeting Tuesday, staff and trustees starting looking the future function of the school that closed in 2004 due to declining enrollment.

Lack of childcare in South Lake Tahoe an issue for parents and the community

You hear of the "great recession" causing issues in many areas from jobs and income to housing, but another victim is quality child care in South Lake Tahoe.

Prior to 2009 there were over 45 licensed day care providers on the South Shore, a majority of them licensed for 12 children and open evenings and weekends. Now, there are just 20, 12 of which are licensed for 12, the other eight are small licenses, for six children or less.

Schools remind parents of new immunization rule for California

El Dorado County Public Health and school officials are reminding parents of a new California school immunization law, SB 277 that went into effect January 1, 2016. The law eliminates exemptions based on personal beliefs, including religious beliefs, for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into child care or school, kindergarten through grade 12.

City offering water safety and lifeguard classes in South Lake Tahoe

Two upcoming series of classes offered by the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department will train participants to become water safety instructors and lifeguards.

The American Red Cross Blended Learning Water Safety Instructor Class and participants must register for this class by April 28 at www.cslt.sportssignup.com. American Red Cross Certified Instructor Larry Phippen will be teaching the calls that trains candidates to teach courses and presentations in the Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program.

Man arrested for making threats at El Dorado County preschools

10 p.m. update 9/29/15:

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office has arrested a 23-year-old Orangevale, CA man in connection with threats made at several El Dorado County preschools and day care centers over the past few days. Many of the schools closed temporarily in response to the threats to staff and children.

Michael McDermort was booked into El Dorado County Jail for charges related to terrorizing threats. As of Tuesday night he was still in jail on a bail hold of $51,500.

Smokey Bear visit Jubilee Kids' Academy

Smokey Bear and U.S. Forest Service crew members visited Jubilee Kids' Academy in South Lake Tahoe this morning to teach preschool kids about campfire safety. Illegal and unattended campfires cause over 90 percent of wildfires in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Grand opening for Douglas County Community and Senior Center

A brand new, 83,225 sq ft community and senior center will be unveiled December 6. The $16.9 million center was expected to open in February, 2015 but construction is ahead of schedule.

Billed as something to serve the community from cradle to grave, the Douglas County Community and Senior Center located across the street from Lampe Park in Gardnerville, NV will have a senior center with a dining room for 300 people, administrative offices, senior day care, health nurse office, preschool, activity rooms, fitness and workout areas and gymnasiums.

Roots and Wings Preschool at Kahle Community Center Earns Five Star Rating

Roots and Wings Preschool is the first preschool in the state of Nevada to earn a five star rating from the state's quality review program, Silver State Stars.

The preschool is located at the Kahle Community Center in Stateline, Nevada.

LTUSD Retirees Honored at School Board Meeting Tuesday

The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation honored the seven school district employees who are retiring this year during a reception held at the school district board meeting Tuesday night.

Three were in attendance and they received an award and gift certificate to Sprouts: Steve Simmons, teacher at Mt. Tallac and employee for 25 years; Bonnie Oliver, preschool aide at Al Tahoe and employee for 16 years; and Judy Ward, bus driver for 9 years.

Barton Skilled Nursing volunteers wear many hats. They play inspiring music, bring communion, and call bingo. Volunteers turn an ordinary birthday party into a trip down memory lane with music from the past. Musicians share ukulele, piano, and organ music with our residents. They honor our vets. Some volunteers bring in their pets to lick faces and shower our residents with love. Other groups bring church to Skilled Nursing residents every Sunday.

LTCC and LTUSD Hold Joint Board Meeting

During the joint portion of the meeting the groups will have three topics of discussion: Trustee boundaries during this fall's elections, seamless pathway from preschool to graduate school, and facilities and technology partnerships.

Nevada panel recommends $4 million in next budget for student tracking system

CARSON CITY — A Nevada panel charged with implementing a system to track individual student performance from preschool through entry into the workforce is recommending that $4 million in state funds be appropriated by Gov. Brian Sandoval and the 2013 Legislature to help accomplish the task.
