Fundraising campaign underway to add dog water station in Rabe Meadow
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/16/2021 - 12:08amSTATELINE, Nev. - The very popular Rabe Meadows to Nevada Beach Trail, also known as the Lam Watah Trail, has no water stations along the route for dogs and their humans, and a local resident is trying to change that.
In cooperation with Douglas County, the U.S. Forest Service and Lake Tahoe Planning and Permitting LLC, Liz Lawton would like to raise the funds necessary to purchase and install a doggie drinking fountain and water bottle filling station. It would be located at the trailhead near the intersection of Kahle Drive and US50 by the restrooms.

That document outlined changes to snowmobile access in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/24/2019 - 11:53amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has released the "Proposed Action for the Winter Recreation and Over Snow Vehicle (OSV) Travel Management Project," and in that document are changes to snowmobile access in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
They have proposed to open OSV use (snowmobiles) to areas around the lake that have been restricted in the past and close up other areas. The plan still leaves about 50 percent of the lands managed by LTBMU open to OSV use.

Full response by law enforcement after man with rifle reported at Nevada Beach
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/18/2019 - 5:20pmSTATELINE, Nev. - Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) were called out to Nevada Beach Sunday at 1:30 p.m. when a caller into dispatch said there was a man on the beach with an assault-style rifle.
The beach was immediately shut down and facilities were searched. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department was called out to assist at the beach.
Tahoe Douglas Fire asked people to stay out of the area in a Twitter post - "There is currently a situation at Nevada Beach. Please stay clear. Law enforcement on scene." One hour later they tweeted all was clear.
5th annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon this weekend; Lane closure announced

The race, presented by Epic Tahoe Adventures (ETA), sends the runners past the spectacular scenery of many of Tahoe’s east and south shore treasures including Glenbrook, Logan Shoals, Cave Rock, Round Hill Pines, Nevada Beach, and Rabe Meadow. They wind down over 1,000 feet from Spooner Summit to the finish line at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe.
Small fires continue around South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/28/2016 - 2:06pmThere have been two more small fires around South Lake Tahoe in the last four days, the most recent Tuesday night.
On Saturday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m. there was a small wildfire on National Forest land off Park Avenue. It was approximately 20 feet by 20 feet and the cause is under investigation.
Tuesday, September 27, there was a small wildfire near the same location reported at 10 p.m. It was approximately 50 feet by 50 feet and also remains under investigation.
Another small fire in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/07/2016 - 3:53pmThe eighth fire in ten days broke out early Wednesday morning in South Lake Tahoe, this time on Edna Street near Pioneer Trail. Just under one-half of an acre of National Forest Service land burned in the 12:30 a.m. fire which burned a short distance away from Friday's Ralph Drive fire.
Firefighters from US Forest Service, South Lake Tahoe, Lake Valley and Cal Fire all responded and got the fire under control quickly, and had the area contained with a wet line by 6:46 a.m.

Another suspicious fire on the South Shore, this time in Rabe Meadows
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/06/2016 - 4:16pmA series of fires along the South Shore of Lake Tahoe are still under investigation and have caused some concern among residents. The most recent one, on Tuesday, burned a portion of grass at Rabe Meadow near Kahle Drive at Stateline.
The fire, which burned a patch 30 feet by 40 feet, was reported at 10:13 a.m. Both Tahoe Douglas Fire Department and the US Forest Service responded.
Nevada Governor visits Lake Tahoe for Tahoe Beach Club groundbreaking

Mecay, President of Tahoe Beach Club, unveiled the end of the journey in a beachfront groundbreaking ceremony Monday in a spot that will see 143 condominium residences, a private beach club, two to five-bedroom condominiums, a private pier, lakefront clubhouse, health club, spa and pool.
Old KGID treatment plant and trailers removed for new luxury Lake Tahoe project

The mobile homes are all gone, with the remaining few given 90 day notices in January to vacate the property.

Dedication of latest phase of Lake Tahoe Bikeway
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/21/2016 - 5:53pmAnother section of what is becoming the premier bikeway circling Lake Tahoe was dedicated in a ceremony behind Lakeside Inn on Wednesday. This new shared-use trail connects to Rabe Meadow with access to Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort.
"The TTD (Tahoe Transportation District) is pleased to have been part of this project," said Carl Hasty, District Manager of TTD. "Bike trails are thought of as a 'nice to do' project in many areas, but in Lake Tahoe they are important."

Mike Bradford knew the April Fool's Day ad campaign was a hit when people started calling him to complain about Lakeside Inn's plans to turn Rabe Meadow into Lakeside Ranch. People took their rants to social media as well.
The headline read, "Lakeside Inn and Casino returns cattle grazing to historic Lake Shore Meadow." The story that followed outlined the casino's plans to raise prime Angus beef so their restaurant, Latin Soul, could put new meaning to the term, Farm-to-Table.
Graffiti vandals tag signage on bike trail through Rabe Meadow
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/25/2015 - 7:03pmVandals were busy this week in Rabe Meadow on the South Shore, defacing the new bike trail railings and signage throughout the historic meadow.
Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) are working on the case, saying they see this type of tagging every summer. Surveillance cameras have lead to the arrest of perpetrators on several other cases and they hope that leads will come in on this case as well.
Firefighters put out suspicious brush fire in Rabe Meadow

Firefighters from Tahoe Douglas Fire Department (TDFD) and the U.S. Forest Service got early control of the fire which was burning in dry brush on Forest Service land just northeast of the bike bath.
The fire is under investigation according to Fire Marshal Eric Guevin. "Anyone with information is to call the Forest Service or TDFD via 911," said Guevin.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will eradicate, control, and contain these plants using chemical treatment. Work will occur at approximately 70 infestation sites beginning May 15 and continuing through September, 2015.
Lake Tahoe snowmobilers face fines if they cause resource damage
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/05/2015 - 11:00pmA lack of the snow in the Sierra Nevada isn't just hurting water supplies, it's also hurting vegetation around popular snowmobiling routes.
This preventable problem is being seen around the lake where snowmobiles on too little snow creates ruts in the soil and crushes vegetation.
The U.S. Forest Service is asking snowmobilers to shift their activities to locations with adequate snow coverage, within permitted snowmobile areas. Snowmobile operators should avoid bare dirt and patchy snow and should not ride across streams or over small trees or brush.

Fire Investigators Say Arsonist Started Four Brush Fires Along Lake Tahoe Hiking Trails
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/30/2014 - 10:11pmLake Tahoe fire officials, the U.S. Forest Service and Douglas County authorities are investigating a number of intentionally set brush fires lit near four hiking trails in the Stateline and Zephyr Cove areas.
In the past two weeks, four separate small brush fires have been started off of hiking trails, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pat Brooks. Because of the nature of the fires, they are believed to have been started by the same person or persons, Brooks added.
USFS Continues Invasive Plant Elimination Project in Lake Tahoe

In South Lake Tahoe the treatment will take place at the Angora wildfire area, Baldwin Beach meadow, Burke Creek trail, Luther Pass campground, Heavenly Creek Meadow, Heavenly Ski Area, Rabe Meadow and the Spooner Summit fire station as well as at several urban lots that the Forest Service controls.

The official dedication of South Lake Tahoe's 1.2-mile shared-use bike path that connects Elks Point and Round Hill Pines and provides access to Rabe Meadow with Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort will be held on Thursday, June 19 at 12 p.m.
The second segment of the Stateline-to-Stateline Bikeway, South Shore Demonstration Project adds to the existing path for a total of 2.2 miles. Meanwhile, the North Demonstration Project is expected to begin construction in 2015 and the first phase will connect Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park.

Tahoe Fund Raises $55,000 for Critical Tahoe Environmental Projects

The money raised by the Fund is for shovel-ready public projects that require additional private support to be completed, and was in addition to the more than $120,000 raised by the dinner for the organization.
