Reminder to keep up on pet's vaccines after rabid skunks found in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The identification of three rabid skunks on the West Slope has prompted the El Dorado County Animal Services to remind pet owners to keep up on their animal's rabies vaccines.

Public Health reminder: Keep pets current on rabies vaccines

El Dorado County Animal Services is reminding residents to keep pets current on rabies vaccines and notify Animal Services of any animal bite. Last week, Animal Services identified a skunk on the 5600 block of Pony Express Trail in Pollock Pines that tested positive for rabies. This is the second rabid skunk to be found in El Dorado County in the past six months.

City Council to examine contract with EDC Animal Control Services

El Dorado County has supplied animal control services to the City of South Lake Tahoe since 1998.

In the past twenty years, the City has entered into seven different agreements with the County for rabies quarantine investigations, humane investigations, vicious animal complaints, shelter services, impoundment of strays, removal of dead animals from City roadways, enforcement of all State, County and City codes dealing with animals, and maintenance of a County Animal Shelter, all six-days-a-week, with options of emergency services.

Third rabid skunk found in El Dorado County this year

A rabid skunk was found in the Pleasant Valley area of El Dorado County, bringing the total number of the rabid animals found to three so far in 2015.

The county's Animal Services reported the skunk was found on Pleasant Valley Road near Grindstone Road and White Rose Lane.

One of their officers was called to the scene around noon on April 24, 2015, after a member of the public observed the skunk showing signs of rabies. The officer retrieved the skunk and sent it to the El Dorado County Public Health Laboratory for testing. Test results came back positive for rabies on April 27.

Authorities Seek Dog That Bit South Lake Tahoe Man

A South Lake Tahoe man was bit by a dog on Sunday while walking near Washington Avenue and Tahoe Keys Blvd. At about 6 p.m., the unidentified man encountered a dog roaming in the neighborhood and was bit as he attempted to read the dog's tags.

The dog is described as a husky type dog with grey and white fluffy fur, wearing a blue collar and tags.

The man was treated and released from medical care but will have to undergo post exposure rabies treatments if authorities cannot verify that the dog is current on its rabies vaccines.

License Your Dog During Amnesty Days

In an effort to encourage dog owners in El Dorado County to have their dogs licensed or renew expired licenses, El Dorado County Animal Services is offering an amnesty period for late and never-licensed, spayed or neutered dogs beginning September 28 through November 30, 2013. During the two month amnesty licensing period, the penalty fees for late, expired, and never-licensed spayed or neutered dogs will be waived by Animal Services.
