SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Winter Weather Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin expires at 4:00 a.m. Monday with most of the precipitation winding down by then other than a few lingering showers through 10:00 a.m. It`s unlikely to be snowing for the Monday morning commute, however, roads may still have snow and ice present.

As wildfires continue to burn in Australia, the United States is sending additional U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) wildfire personnel to assist with ongoing bushfire suppression efforts in Australia. Three 10-person Incident Management Teams and a group consisting of air support personnel have arrived in Australia in recent days.

Students from South Tahoe High School are back from their Presidents’ Day break just in time for Advanced Placement, SAT and ACT tests to begin. The SAT exam takes place on March 9, while the ACT test is scheduled for April 13.
With the constant snow, the some of the students at STHS said they’re feeling the effects.
Alex Boyko, junior, said the miserable weather has made him a lot sadder recently.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It takes a tragedy to bring people together, no matter their politics, their income or twitter handle.
Many in the South Lake Tahoe and Meyers community remember where they were at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, 2007 and what happened in the days that followed. The Angora Fire quickly tore through neighborhoods, destroying 251 homes and burning 3,100 acres. While it seems small in comparison with the monster fires of 2017 and 2018, it took everything from so many local families.
The community came together to help their friends and neighbors.
Beachgoers in the Dominican Republic see waves of plastic trash

Instead, beachgoers this week were greeted by tons of trash floating on top of the ocean, barely moving around with the motion of the waves due to the massive volume.
Parley for the Oceans released a video of what they are calling a "world's largest garbage emergency," showing tons of mostly plastic trash, something that happens every time it rains in the Caribbean country.

There is a very warm, wet storm heading to Lake Tahoe, the Sierra and western Nevada, bringing with is gusty winds and significant rains beginning Friday and continuing through Saturday. There is a flood watch in effect from Friday, April 6, 05:00 p.m. until Sunday, April 8 at 5:00 a.m. The main concern is the potential for flooding along creeks, streams, rivers and in urban areas.
Snow levels may rise as high as 11000 feet, keeping the bulk of the precipitation in the form of rain. Rainfall totals between 2 to 4 inches are expected along the

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as many were enjoying sunny skies and temps in the 50s and 60s, Mother Nature is sending a bit of change to the area this week.
Coming in from the west is a significant storm with gusty winds and heavy rains Friday through Sunday. The storm is a warm and wet one so there will be the potential for flooding along creeks, streams and rivers.
Monday will be back in the mid-50s.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The big winter of 2016/17 may be over, but its effects continue to linger, and this time it comes with a pointed snout, small rounded ears, a body-length scaly tail and a high breeding rate.
And because of this four legged rodent, fondly known as the mouse, traps and poison are flying off the shelves of stores in South Lake Tahoe, and phones in local exterminators' offices are ringing off the hook.
Cave Rock project wins national transportation award

The Nevada Department of Transportation’s U.S. 50 Cave Rock tunnel extension project, which completed ahead of schedule last year, has been recognized with an America’s Transportation Award.
The award from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recognizes the project as the best transportation project under $25 million in the western states for enhancing community and quality of life. The award recognizes the project for enhancing traffic safety and mobility, as well as involving community stakeholders in the project.
Highway 50 between South Lake Tahoe and Placerville reopens

10:45 a.m. update Feb. 15 - Some debris is still falling onto Highway 50 near the Alder Creek area, resulting in lane closures for crews to clean it up. Expect some delays at times.

Crews working nonstop on Highway 50 after three mudslides closed the road have been able to get all cleaned up and the road opened in both directions at 10:32 p.m. Tuesday.
El Dorado County man drowns after car goes into American River

A Silver Fork man was on his way to work in Pollock Pines Friday when it is believed his vehicle crashed into the American River, sending him and his vehicle into the water.
Digger Gooch, 37, was westbound on Highway 50 February 10 when deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) believe he crashed into the river which was moving rapidly due to heavy rains in the area.

Highway 50 near Kyburz reopens after mud flows over roadway

Caltrans closed part of Highway 50 near Kyburz Wednesday afternoon to allow them time to clean up a river of mud that was flowing over the roadway.
Travelers between Placerville and South Lake Tahoe had up to an hour delay as crews cleaned out overflowing culverts to get the water moving in a direction that wouldn't hamper drivers.
With more heavy rains on the way, and ground that is already saturated, residents and drivers can expect more of the same through Friday.
Power outage to Lake Tahoe west and north shore, over 4,000 customers affected

5:10 p.m. update: There are currently electrical outages in South Lake Tahoe affecting about 162 customers. Crews are already working diligently to restore power to all customers.

Snow and heavy rain forecast for Lake Tahoe this week

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Lake Tahoe basin from 10:00 p.m. Sunday night through Monday at 10:00 p.m. with up to 10" of snow forecast for lake level.
As the snow passes Monday night, heavy rains will hit the Sierra, Reno and the Carson Valley with flooding possible in areas of poor drainage, creeks and streams. Rivers may see some rise with the rains.
Chains controls were up on all mountain roads Sunday night.

Lake Tahoe is filling up with water and is currently holding the most water for the month of January since 2013.
With a natural rim of 6223 feet in altitude, Lake Tahoe is above that by 1.67 feet at 6224.67 today, January 15, 2017. On this date in 2016, the lake was almost three feet lower at 6221.7. The highest January point in the past six years was in 2012 when the lake was at 6226.62. The highest point during this period was on June 5, 2012 when the elevation of the lake was 6227.65.
NDOT begins long list of repairs in Nevada after storm damage

After Nevada Governor Sandoval toured the flood damaged areas of Western Nevada, Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and their emergency contractors jumped on their long list of repair needs after the flooding damaged several state routes.

Many roads in Nevada were under water Sunday after torrential rains went through, causing rivers and streams to flood. In Reno alone 50 roads were closed due to high water levels, and all bridges over the Truckee River in Reno were also closed.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) spent the day evaluating the state's roads affected by floods and rain. Multiple state roads in the greater Truckee Meadows and Carson Valley areas remain closed, including those in the Sparks industrial area and areas of Reno, including East McCarran Boulevard and South Virginia Street.

Emergency crews have been busy all day, responding to homes, businesses and roads flooding. The number of calls haven't been accumulated yet, but those listening to police and sheriff scanner feeds know it must be dozens if not, hundreds.
The Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe is at 11.26 feet as of 7:00 p.m. Sunday. 11.50 feet is considered major flooding with 12.5 feet at the disastrous level.
Highway 89 reopens after Emerald Fire burns 176 acres near South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Highway 89 reopened at noon on Monday, October 17 after being closed since Friday due to the Emerald Fire.
Fire and road crews have been working to complete containment of the fire as well as clearing debris and fallen trees after the weekend's fire and heavy rains.
Also, all evacuation orders have been lifted.
Traffic will be metered through the fire area by Caltrans. The Highway will be subject to future closure as repair work and tree removal continues and debris is removed from the highway.
Emerald Fire now 100% contained, road remains closed for cleanup

The Emerald Fire is 100 percent contained after burning 176 acres along Highway 89 near South Lake Tahoe.
Debris from the weekend's high winds and torrential rains near the burn area continue to impact the roadway and Highway 89 remains closed until Caltrans completes cleanup. It is closed from Fallen Leaf Lake to Emerald Bay North Gate.
According to Liberty Utilities, all customers have had power restored.
The following areas will be open to residents only:

Crews remain at the scene of the Emerald Fire near South Lake Tahoe today, both getting containment lines around the burned 176 acres and preparing for heavy rains that could cause flash flooding. There is a containment line around 90 percent of the fire, with the west slopes above Cascade Lake remaining to be contained.
As of 7:00 a.m. Sunday, there are six engines, three fire crews and one tender in the fire area which surrounded Highway 89 each and west between Fallen Leaf Lake and Cascade Lake.
Heavy rain totals with Saturday's storm in the Sierra, more on the way

Since Friday morning, rain has pummeled many areas of the Sierra Nevada. As of 8:00 a.m. Sunday, South Lake Tahoe had received 2.54" of rain, with more on the way. By Monday morning, a trace of new snow could be seen on the South Shore.
Update on Emerald Fire: 176 acres burned, remains at 90% contained

10:00PM update - The Emerald Fire is now 90 percent contained after burning 176 acres in the Spring Creek area between Fallen Leaf and Cascade lakes and Lake Tahoe on Friday, October 14.
Heavy rains have helped put out the fire as firefighters complete the containment line above Cascade Lake.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Power remains off in the area as a precaution, and homeowners are still evacuated until conditions improved as flash flooding in the burn area may occur.

8:00AM update 10/15: Highway 89 remains closed in both directions from Fallen Leaf Lake Road to Emerald Bay due to the Emerald Fire which remains 80 percent contained this morning. Acreage burned is 210 acres.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
There are 3 engines and 12 firefighters still on the scene.
Opening time for Hwy 89 is still unclear. CHP estimates Saturday afternoon and Caltrans estimates the road will be closed until Monday. This is to allow crews to clean up the fallen trees and other debris on, and near, the roadway.

With Wednesday's calm and sunny skies, and mild temperatures, it's the perfect time to prepare for a new weather system that is headed to Lake Tahoe. It's also the perfect time to head to Hope Valley for a last glimpse of their fabulous fall color since forecast winds and rains should remove the last of the leaves.
Two waves of the weather system will hit Lake Tahoe, the first Thursday night and Friday morning, the second on Saturday.
Cave Rock projected finished ahead of schedule; All travel lanes open

All lanes of US 50 through the Cave Rock tunnel are now open to traffic, almost a month ahead of schedule on the $6 million traveler safety and roadside water quality project.
Since May, drivers have had to utilize a single lane of traffic in each direction through one side of the tunnel.
The contractor, Q&D Construction, will earn an extra $300,000 for completing early. Their contract gave them $15,000 for each day prior to the deadline they completed early, with a maximum of $300,000, which they earned.

Both lanes of traffic through the Cave Rock Tunnel are now being moved to the mountain side lane as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) begins their $6 million enhancement of the tunnels, retaining of falling rock and lane improvements.
Sierra snowpack holding 130% more water than average

Recent heavy rains and snow have added much needed water to the Sierra Nevada snowpack, bringing the snow water equivalent at Phillips Station to 25.4 inches, 130 percent of the February 1 average.
Frank Gehrke, chief of the California Cooperative Snow Surveys Program, led the monthly media-oriented manual snow survey near Sierra-at-Tahoe on Wednesday, leading the group to the measuring location which recorded a snow depth of 76.2 inches.

Drought to affect the changing of season in South Lake Tahoe

Thousands flock to the Sierra Nevada every fall to watch the color changes of the aspen trees along with the annual upstream migration of the Kokanee Salmon in Taylor Creek to lay their eggs and complete their life cycle.
The bright yellows, oranges and reds of the aspen are emblematic of fall in Lake Tahoe, but this year that will not happen in the typical fashion that people have become accustomed to.
In a stroll through many of the aspen groves on the South Shore it looks like fall has already happened with dried leaves leaving the branches and making their way to the forest floor.
Lane reductions at Cave Rock beginning Wednesday

In order to prepare for a 2016 project that will extend the westbound Cave Rock tunnel entrance, drivers using Highway 50 through the tunnel will experience traffic delays starting Wednesday, September 9, 2015.
Both directions of traffic will be alternated through the eastbound Cave Rock tunnel and travel delays of up to 30 minutes between 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. can be expected for the next four to five weeks, Monday-Friday.
New STHS bleachers behind schedule but ready by first game

Mother Nature hasn't been very nice to Southern Bleachers out of Texas. They are the contractors working on the new football stadium bleachers at South Tahoe High and they missed the August 8 deadline for completion of the project. Summer rains caused several delays but they are now back on track to have the project finished by August 21, a week before the school's first football game.

Enjoy a Tahoe afternoon on the lawn at the historic Valhalla on Sunday, August 2 when the Sacramento band, Richie Lawrence and the Yolos perform.
Rain or shine, the concert will go on. If it rains, all will be moved indoors to the Boathouse Theater. This will be the last in Valhalla's FREE Concert on the Lawn series which is part of the Valhalla Art, Music & Theatre Festival.
The band is a mix of jazz, French folk and country, with original music.
Bring your beach chairs and lunch and enjoy music on the lawn.
Disaster Declaration for parts of Douglas County

9:20 p.m. update 7/8/15
Approximately 141 homes have water and structural damage after Wednesday's flooding in the Stephanie and Johnson Lane areas of Douglas County. It is unknown how many homes may have landscape damage.
No injuries have been reported.

Mother Nature helping douse Washington Fire, now 99% contained

Heavy rains over the past 48 hours have given firefighters the help they needed to contain the Washington Fire burning south of Markleeville.
As of 5 p.m. on July 4, the lightning caused fire was 99% contained after burning 17,790 acres.
Fire crews will continue to construct the remaining fire line and mop up hot spots along the perimeter. A smaller contingency of firefighters and equipment will remain on the incident with the type 3 management organization while still meeting incident objectives as outlined in the transfer of command.
Mudslide closes Hwy 4 in burn area near Markleeville

Just a day after people celebrated the opening of highways through the Washington Fire area south of Markleeville, a mudslide has closed Highway 4 over Ebbetts Pass. The road is closed 2.4 miles south of town.
A strong thunderstorm formed over the northwest half of the fire Wednesday, bringing heavy rains and frequent lightning.

1. It is SO much cooler than the valley. With nights in the 40s and days in the 70s and 80s, it’s the perfect spot to cool off!
2. Yes, our beautiful lake is a little lower, but with a depth of 1,644’, a loss of one foot over the next 4 months really isn’t that much. There is still lots of water left to play in!
3. This is a great time to explore the other water sport options since it may not be perfect for motorboats and jet skis. Plenty of places to rent kayaks and stand-up paddle boards.
Recent rains push Lake Tahoe back to its natural rim

Recent rains have Lake Tahoe lapping at its natural rim and while it may stay there for a time, the lake should soon start dropping again during this year of drought.
Thursday, the lake level was officially measured at just a few hundredths of an inch before its rim but a trickle of water flowed from the lake and toward the Truckee River. Similar conditions have existed since Monday, the first time the lake was so high since dropping below the rim last October.
“It’s basically at the rim,” said Federal Water Master Chad Blanchard. “Right now it’s at its peak that we’ve seen.”
Roadwork at Cave Rock to cause delays next week

Heavy rains in February caused part of the rock face at Cave Rock to fall into the lanes of traffic on Highway 50. A temporary fix was completed at that time.
Depending on the weather, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) plans on closing two lanes in order to further evaluate the damage and secure the Cave Rock rock face and slope on U.S. 50, Lake Tahoe following recent rockfall.
Tahoe bear break-ins could spike with drought-related food shortage

Now some wildlife activists want to lure those bears away from neighborhoods by feeding them where they live -- in the woods -- even though that practice is illegal.
The activists argue that the drastic action will help the bears survive.
South Shore man helps people facing disasters around the world

Friday afternoon 3 p.m: Ryder Evans is on a plane to the African nation for at least a two week stay.
Emergency repairs to close part of Highway 50 through Cave Rock

The weekend's storm brought heavy rains into the Lake Tahoe area which caused heavy boulders to fall onto Highway 50 near Cave Rock on Saturday evening. NDOT maintenance crews removed the boulders from the roadway, some as large as six feet wide.
Starting on Wednesday, February 11, emergency repairs will begin to remove potentially unstable hillside rocks in the same area to prevent future slides. The westbound lanes in the tunnel will be closed as crews work in the area.

Overnight, South Lake Tahoe experienced wind gusts up to 54 mph and steady winds at 30 mph and more of the same is expected during the day Friday.
Rains should start after 11 a.m. according to the National Weather Service. They are calling for snow on Monday.
