Colder temperatures delay paving Highway 50; Work expected into weekend
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/10/2019 - 12:19pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With below-average temperatures in South Lake Tahoe this week, the paving of the Highway 50 project has been delayed and may go into the weekend.
Mid-day Thursday it is still in the 30s though a high of 51 degrees is in the forecast. The low overnight will be 18 degrees.
Chain controls dropping as latest storm passes through Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/28/2019 - 10:08amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - More than a foot of snow fell overnight at ski resorts around Lake Tahoe, with a few inches falling at lake level. With the snow came road closures and chain controls, but sunny skies this morning are allowing road crews to finish plowing and those controls will be dropping during the day.
Sierra-at-Tahoe reports 16 inches of snow in the last 24 hours, with 15 inches at Heavenly, 14 inches at both Mt. Rose and Alpine Meadows and 13 inches at Kirkwood.
As of 10:00 a.m. Thursday, the following roads still have some sort of controls:

Caltrans hopes to get I80 open late Wednesday: Amtrak trains on the move again
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/27/2019 - 7:33pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Passengers on two Amtrak trains heading through the Sierra on Tuesday evening had some excitement on their trips after a plow train was derailed near Soda Springs, fell through a trestle and blocked the tracks.
The east bound train with 155 passengers on board slept in the heated train, then resumed their trip to Chicago at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday after rotary plows cleared he tracks. Their trip puts them in the Windy City 16 hours behind schedule.
Highway 50 reopens to westbound traffic over Echo Summit
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/10/2019 - 11:50amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The main artery between South Lake Tahoe and Sacramento has reopened to westbound traffic after road crews are working on clearing away 2-3 feet of new snow on US50. Eastbound traffic is being held four miles east of Placerville.
I80 remains closed at this hour as do the Mt. Rose Highway and state routes 88 and 267.
It will take a while to clear all roads, and those that are clear will see heavy traffic as the weekend visitors make their way home.
Lake Tahoe weather update: Blizzard Warning in effect for Monday
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/03/2019 - 2:42pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) has just issued a Blizzard Warning for Lake Tahoe from 12:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Monday. Expect heavy snow with blizzard conditions with additional snow accumulations of 2 to 5 feet at lake level, with 4 to 8 feet above 7000 feet expected. Snow drifts could be deeper than 10 feet.
Winds are also associated with the blizzard with gusts as high as 50 mph this afternoon through Monday with gusts up to 100 mph over ridges.

Expect delays as NDOT restripes SR28 at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/20/2017 - 8:21pmNicer weather is giving road crews around Lake Tahoe a chance to start their annual maintenance duties, and beginning on Monday, April 24, Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will be working on State Route 28.
Motorists should anticipate travel delays up to 30 minutes as the road is restriped from Monday through Thursday, April 27. Work hours are between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. daily.
The mobile road striping operation is scheduled to begin at the State Route 28/U.S. 50 Spooner junction on Monday and then move westward to Nevada-California state line over the following days.
Douglas County declares State of Emergency

The flood event is supposed to continue into the duration of the weekend. The declaration has been submitted to the State of Nevada and will allow regional partners to speed up the delivery of resources required to more effectively aid in requesting additional resources, aid in recovery, and meet the needs of the community during a time of crisis.

City crews working nonstop to clear South Lake Tahoe roads
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/24/2017 - 8:58pmThe roads around Lake Tahoe have been hard to navigate this week after several feet of snow fell in the basin after the last series of storms over the weekend. Many streets in South Lake Tahoe remain narrow and thick with snow, making it hard to drive through neighborhoods.
Just as residents struggle with all that snow left on their roofs, driveways and walkways, City snowplows are also struggling with what seemed at times as nonstop snow.

Douglas County road crews cannot work again until January 17
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/13/2017 - 7:35pmThe Douglas County road crews cannot work anymore hours over the three-day weekend due to their having reached the maximum number of driving hours allowed due to flooding and snow conditions in the Carson Valley over the last week.
Hours are regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The Douglas County staff can resume regular duty on Tuesday January 17, 2017 at 7:00 a.m. If an emergency arises, staff may be called in after 5:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Flooding closing South Lake Tahoe area roads
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/08/2017 - 12:31pmSouth Lake Tahoe, Calif. - El Dorado County has closed Lake Tahoe Blvd at Sawmill Pond due to flooding just before 11:00 a.m. It is closed in both directions according to the California Highway Patrol with over two feet of water on the roadway. They are expecting the flooding to spread in the area.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department is assisting with signage going up to warn travelers.
12:52 p.m. Sunday update - Highway 50 at Sierra at Tahoe Blvd is experiencing flooding. Reports of high water at Apache Drive in Meyers by the Post Office, and Lake Tahoe Blvd around Angora Creek.
Highway 89 reopens after Emerald Fire burns 176 acres near South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/17/2016 - 1:57pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Highway 89 reopened at noon on Monday, October 17 after being closed since Friday due to the Emerald Fire.
Fire and road crews have been working to complete containment of the fire as well as clearing debris and fallen trees after the weekend's fire and heavy rains.
Also, all evacuation orders have been lifted.
Traffic will be metered through the fire area by Caltrans. The Highway will be subject to future closure as repair work and tree removal continues and debris is removed from the highway.
Roadwork on Black Bart, Martin and Barbara Avenues, expect delays
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/15/2016 - 10:11amOn August 23 and 24, El Dorado County road crews will be in the area of Black Bart, Barbara and Martin Avenues in South Lake Tahoe to do slurry seal work.
They will implement daytime reversing traffic controls in the area and those using the roads can expect delays up to ten minutes. These dates are estimates and are subject to change due to weather or other variables.
Large boulder falls onto Highway 50 north of Cave Rock tunnel
Submitted by paula on Sat, 02/20/2016 - 8:28pmA large boulder has rolled down onto Highway 50 on the Lake Tahoe east shore near Logan Creek, causing a dent in the road but no injuries.
The Nevada Highway Patrol was dispatched to the incident at 6:19 p.m. Saturday, February 20. Once there they found the boulder, it was reported to be eight feet across, blocking one lane north of the Cave Rock Tunnel in the westbound lane.
One passerby said the boulder was bigger than their Lincoln Navigator, at least six to seven tall.
Carson Valley flooding update
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/10/2015 - 5:45pmDouglas County Emergency Management is currently working on managing the current flooding in the Stephanie and Johnson Lane areas of Douglas County.
The State Damage Assessment Teams went out to the affected areas on Thursday to determine the amount of damage to public infrastructure as well as attempting to determine private property damage following state and FEMA damage assessment criteria. The County hopes to have this report completed as soon as possible.
Disaster Declaration for parts of Douglas County

Approximately 141 homes have water and structural damage after Wednesday's flooding in the Stephanie and Johnson Lane areas of Douglas County. It is unknown how many homes may have landscape damage.
No injuries have been reported.

Car accidents and spinouts come with snow in South Lake Tahoe

Six people were injured in a weather related head-on crash Saturday morning on Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper said. One woman remains in serious condition.
The accident was reported at 8:48 a.m. and involved a Toyota Camry, occupied by five people, three males and two females, and a Volvo, driven by a Carson City resident.
According to NHP Trooper Daniel Lopez, the Camry was going eastbound on Highway 50 and crossed over into the westbound lane, striking the Volvo head-on, said Lopez.
Mud cleanup continues in the Carson Valley
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/24/2014 - 11:11pmCleanup efforts continue on roads in the Carson Valley that were covered in mud, dirt and debris after the flooding developed after the wet storm that hit the area on July 20.
Crews from Douglas County as well as private contractors are on the job.
Shortly after the flooding began, County Commission, Staff and East Fork Fire met to develop an action plan and began calling for additional resources from Carson City. A declaration of Emergency was not declared due to fact that the flood did not rise to the level of overwhelming the county’s resources to protect health and safety.
Heading West on Highway 50 Sunday Morning? Road Closed in El Dorado Hills
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/28/2014 - 10:12pmThe section of Highway 50 between El Dorado Hills Blvd and Bass Lake Road will be closed between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. on three Sundays in order to allow blasting for a new highway interchange project.
On June 28, July 13 and July 20 traffic will be diverted off of the highway since it will be closed i both directions.
